Cageside Community Star Ratings: Sasha, Bayley, Natalya vs. Riott Squad

Welcome to Cageside Community Star Ratings for Evolution!

For some wrestling fans, star ratings are a way of life. It’s one thing to say that a match is good or bad, but can you actually put a number on it?

The star rating system is a scale ranging from 0 to 5 with increments of 0.25. A 5-star match is as close to perfect as it gets while a 0-star match is a complete dud.

Determining the star rating for a given match is a highly subjective process. In general the goal is to wrap up all the important elements of a match into one simple number. Some factors to consider may include the story and booking of the match, the workrate of the performers, ring psychology, length of the match, audience reaction, and so forth.

There is no such thing as a wrong answer, because every wrestling fan consumes this art form in a different way.

The purpose of Cageside Community Star Ratings is for the readers to assign star ratings to every single match on a given WWE pay-per-view event. These results will be tabulated and summarized after every match on the pay-per-view has been voted on by the community.

The final match up for debate from Evolution is Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Natalya versus the Riott Squad.

Please select a star rating in the poll below and discuss your thoughts on this match in the comments section.

Lucha Underground’s Tope 10 for Oct. 2018

Ultima Lucha Cuatro is tonight! We’ve got a little time to kill until Part One airs at 8pm ET on El Rey Network, so let’s get pumped up by checking out the best of Lucha Underground from October.

Each and every episode of Lucha Underground features maneuvers, quotes, outfits, props, scenes, and more that deserve recognition. That is where the Tope 10 comes in. This list shows appreciation for the moments that are more exciting than a flying tope.

(This edition of the Tope 10 will be an abbreviated version for each episode covering all of October so as not to overheat any devices with an overload of exciting GIFs and photos.)

If you are new to the Lucha Underground scene, you can catch it Wednesdays at 8pm ET on El Rey Network, buy all episodes to date on iTunes and Amazon, or watch seasons one and two on Netflix. See if El Rey Network is available in your area.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch episode seventeen (October 3) yet, check out the preview and the recap/review.

5. Brother, sister bonding

Nothing brings a family together like brawling each other in a wrestling match. Marty Martinez appreciated Mariposa’s motivational speeches, so he gave her the first shot at his newly acquired Lucha Underground Championship.

Time will tell if Mariposa will hold a grudge at Marty breaking her arm. Based on the character’s history, I would bet no in general, but yes if Marty loses the belt to Pentagon DARK at Ultima Lucha Cuatro in a Cero Miedo match.

4. Intense ingenuity

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Killshot stomping down on Son of Havoc’s arm like that was a maneuver I’ve never seen before. Damn, it looks painful.

3. Three’s company

Enjoy Ivelisse’s suplex train with Paul London and El Bunny.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

With mighty moves like that in a standard trios team bout, I can’t wait to see what is unleashed in the three-way elimination Trios Championship match at Ultima Lucha Cuatro.

2. Rabbit claw

Lucha Underground

The White Rabbit’s in-ring debut left a memorable stain in our memories. The hairless hare used the mandible claw on Joey Ryan, but he took it to another level with bloody damage so severe that Ryan will not be ready for Ultima Lucha Cuatro.

1. Chairicane

During play time with her brother, Mariposa rained down a hurricane of chairs atop Marty for about one solid minute. It was glorious and definitely on the short list for moment of the season.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch episode eighteen (October 10) yet, check out the preview and the recap/review.

Enjoy Mack and Fenix flying if your clicking finger desires.

5. Cameraman down

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Even when something goes wrong in the Temple, it goes oh so right.

4. Ricky and Rosa sitting in a ring

K-I-S-S-I-N-G.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Eww, gross. Ricky would later kiss that dirty doll on the lips. Eww, double gross.

3. Fenix rope bouncing

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

No commentary needed. Just marvel in Fenix’s prowess.

2. Ass-kicking Taya

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

I’ve said it before and I will say it again. Angry Taya is the best Taya. You would think being slammed through a cake on your wedding day might cause caution. Oh, no. Not with Taya. She straight up called out Matanza to the ring and proceed to kick his ass by stomping a mudhole. Taya’s fury didn’t stop Matanza for long, but it was awesome while it lasted.

1. Squish the spider

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Reklusa put up one heck of a fight in her Temple debut, but she couldn’t outlast the practitioner of the dark arts. Pentagon DARK used the apron to his advantage on various occasions, including a package piledriver of doom.

Reklusa would go on to kick out of that attack and even destroy Pentagon, Canadian-style. Pentagon was too tough though. Another package piledriver would end her night in the ring. But, Reklusa was not out altogether as she aided Marty Martinez with a barbwire bat and gasoline. The Cero Miedo match is going to be lit.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch episode nineteen (October 17) yet, check out the preview and the recap/review.

6. Not worth its weight in paper

Lucha Underground

Look at the size of that contract. It is thicker than any textbook I ever had to study. Leave it to Famous B to bring the chuckles. Also amusing was Sammy Guevara’s manner of terminating the contract.

5. Around the world

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Go, Aerostar, go. Use that stooge as a your own personal gymnastics apparatus.

4. Strong toss

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Johnny Mundo does lots of flying around the ring, but never like that. Jake Strong’s strong toss was impressive.

3. Brutal mauling

Lucha Underground

After Johnny Mundo’s loss to Jake Strong, Matanza came on the scene to maul Mundo. It was vicious ground and pound with headbutts thrown in. So much so that I feared for Mundo’s life in the Sacrifice to the Gods match. Mundo has a better chance now, but I’ll discuss that later. Back to Matanza, his display of ferociousness gave me the tingles.

2. Dante Fox returns

Dante Fox has returned to the Temple. He was a surprise announcement into a battle royal. Even though Fox didn’t get to do much that night, I was still super excited that he was there at all. The Believers in the Temple felt the same way.

1. Limo Lord?

El Rey Network

In the beginning of the episode, Jake Strong declined Antonio Cueto’s offer for a shot at the Lucha Underground Championship in the Ultima Lucha Cuatro main event. Strong wanted to prove himself. Upon leaving, Strong used a strong voice to remind Cueto that the Temple is now Strong’s. The voice was a creepy, demon-possessed sound.

When I was collecting GIFs for the Dario Cueto tribute, I noticed several hints from the Limo Lord’s mouth that I had previously forgotten. Comments like Councilman Delgado saying Matanza wouldn’t be the only one having fun, and such. I now have no doubt that Jake Strong is the Limo Lord’s human vessel. That was such an awesome surprise and an excellent way to bring the older side story back to the forefront.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch episode twenty (October 24) yet, check out the preview and the recap/review.

Enjoy a hurricanrana from Aerostar off the railing and King Cuerno’s Arrow from the Depths of Hell.

5. Safety first

Oh, it is just Drago ushering in a forklift in the middle of a match. Nothing to see here.

When Lucha Underground does the ridiculous, it is so over-the-top that the moment is enjoyable. Just look at how Drago’s helmet has holes for his horns.

4. Bow and arrow submission

During the Seven to Survive match, King Cuerno displayed his technical skill with a brutal bow and arrow submission. The twist was that he shifted position and it looked like he was going to rip his opponent’s arm out of its socket. I’ve never seen that bow and arrow variation before. Impressive.

3. Forklift leap

Lucha Underground

Aerostar jumping off a forklift was just another day in the Temple for the Believers.

2. Flying Fox

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Dante Fox was rolling in Seven to Survive. Then he upped the ante. His nickname should be Tails after the flying fox.

1. Gauntlet gift

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Johnny Mundo looked determined to kick Matanza’s ass with all that rooftop practicing, but we all know he didn’t stand a chance. Aerostar came to the rescue by granting the usage of the gauntlet. Power surged through Johnny’s eyes as he played with his new toy.

Johnny Mundo already does amazing moves in the ring. Imagine what he could be capable of with the power of the gauntlet. I’m expecting some crazy stuff to go down in the Sacrifice to the Gods match.

How does the October Tope 10 stack up to your list? I’ll leave you with Fighting Spirit clips about the Rabbit Tribe, Dante Fox, Seven to Survive, as well as Pentagon’s choice of theme music for the Lucha Brothers.

SmackDown’s numbers not as scary for Halloween show

It wasn’t a huge increase, but SmackDown’s television numbers were both trending in the right direction coming out of Evolution and heading toward Crown Jewel & Survivor Series.

2,110,000 people tuned in to USA Network on Tues., Oct. 30. That’s 23K more than the week prior. It also have WWE the 9th biggest audience among Tuesday’s cable originals, behind a bevy of Fox News and MSNBC programs.

SmackDown’s ratings were up as well. The .73 share of the overall 18 – 49 year old demographic was the best number of anything on cable last night.

It’s difficult to pinpoint any one thing which may have led to the increase; the only match announced in well in advance which ended up happening was the Trick ‘r’ Street fight. With such incremental rises in both metrics, this was likely just a normal swing within the range where the blue brand’s been operating lately (SmackDown 1000 not included).

Here’s a list of Tuesday numbers from the past six months:

Oct. 23 – 2.09 million / .69
Oct. 16 – 2.55 million / .92
Oct. 9 – 2.1 million / .67
Oct. 2 – 2.1 million / .68
Sept. 25 – 2.19 million / .72
Sept. 18 – 2.28 million / .78
Sept. 11 – 2.23 million / .72
Sept. 4 – 2.32 million / .77
Aug. 28 – 2.35 million / .75
Aug. 21 – 2.44 million / .77
Aug. 14 – 2.19 million / .7
Aug. 7 – 2.2 million / .73
July 31 – 2.4 million / .75
July 24 – 2.34 million / .75
July 17 – 2.29 million / .74
July 10 – 2.18 million / .68
July 3 – 2.01 million / .54
June 26 – 2.14 million / .64
June 19 – 2.32 million / .78
June 12 – 2.18 million / .66
June 5 – 2.14 million / .67
May 29 – 2.2 million / .66
May 22 – 2.2 million / .68
May 15 – 2.3 million / .7
May 8 – 2.29 million / .71
May 1 – 2.44 million / .77
April 24 – 2.55 million / .8
April 17 – 2.8 million / .98
April 10 – 2.95 million / .98
April 3 – 2.47 million / .79

Hulk Hogan will reportedly host Crown Jewel for WWE

The twisting, turning saga of Hulk Hogan and Crown Jewel continues.

After quietly adding the recently reinstated Hall of Famer to the event page for Fri., Nov. 2’s pay-per-view (PPV) event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, then removing him when several websites noticed he was listed as a “Featured Superstar”, WWE has now confirmed to Pro Wrestling Sheet that Hogan will serve as the host for Crown Jewel.

The move will increase the controversy surrounding the event, but also keep a separate show from being subject to criticism as the first live WWE appearance for Hogan since he was fired when racist statements made on a sex tape at the center of his lawsuit against Gawker were made public in 2015.

Crown Jewel airs on WWE Network Friday at noon Eastern.

The Champ may have met her Twitter match

In case you couldn’t tell, we’re big fans of SmackDown Women’s champion Becky Lynch around here. That’s meant touting her prowess in the ring, with a microphone, during non/semi-kayfabe interviews and on social media.

But after her latest fire promo on the Oct. 30 episode of the blue brand, we think she might have met her match on Twitter.

The Badlass (who is blocking out some steampunk gear and other looks from her true-blue babyface days) took a shot at sports entertainers who cosplay during a speech which was otherwise directed at her Survivor Series opponent, Raw Women’s champ Ronda Rousey. Alexa Bliss, a former rival known for her pop culture-inspired outfits, took exception to that. And got the kind of online slam we’ve come to expect for The Champ:

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Good one, right? Problem is, as the hashtag implies, Bliss has a trump card in any and all dealings with Bex – she won their feud after Lynch became the inaugural SmackDown Women’s champ. And like many of us, Alexa thinks the Lasskicker is likely to meet the same fate as all of Rousey’s WWE opponents to date.

It all leaves The Man delivering a pretty pedestrian, “oh yeah, well shut up” type reply to the Goddess’ return shot:

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Maybe my standards for Becky Lynch Twitter-ownage are too high, but I think Alexa more than held her own here.

Don’t call them the Bullet Club

It’s a transition which has been happening for a while, and on Chris Jericho’s Rock ‘n’ Wrestling Rager at Sea, the cast of Being The Elite made it official. Don’t call them the Bullet Club…

During a recording of Talk is Jericho done on the ship, Matt Jackson of The Young Bucks broke down the group’s history with the New Japan-owned faction/brand name and officially unveiled the not surprising, but presumably creator-owned name they’ll be going by moving forward:

“Myself, Kenny Omega and my brother, we attacked AJ Styles and called ourselves ‘The Elite’ of Bullet Club.

In the beginning it was a subgroup of the Bullet Club and we had a lot of fun, we decided to start a traveling vlog of May of [2016], called Being the Elite. After awhile, Nick, Kenny, and I realized there’s only so many times we can show us going through airport security. So, we should probably introduce some new characters. Obviously, our first choice was to pick our friends from our unit, Bullet Club, because naturally we travel with these guys, we hang out with these guys, and we do basically everything together.

For a long time now, it seems like everybody kind of excluded [The Elite] and we got called ‘The Being the Elite Guys,’ ‘BTE Guys,’ or ‘The Elite.’

It’s not like I’m going to make this crazy announcement because it just feels natural, right? I think everyone on the ship can agree, it’s not just Kenny, me, and Nick as The Elite, we’re all elite. So, from this very day forward, why don’t we just call all of us The Elite?”

As Jackson says, it’s not like any of this is news. All the members of the crew made a big deal on social media about their “last” Bullet Club themed merch a few weeks back, and Cody Rhodes has declared himself separate from that group several times recently.

What is interesting is what this means for their impending free agency. Nothing about separating from the Bullet Club brand makes it more likely they’ll go to WWE, but it does drop their biggest tie to New Japan.

Stay tuned…

There have been zero women’s matches on the last three episodes of SmackDown

Back in July when WWE announced that their first ever all-women’s pay-per-view (PPV) would take place in late October, I was excited to see how much extra TV time the female superstars would receive in October to properly build to their matches at Evolution. That’s how things typically work in WWE; most of the TV time is allocated to the feuds that are most relevant to the very next PPV.

That excitement was quickly diminished in mid-September when WWE announced they were returning to Saudi Arabia for Crown Jewel on Nov. 2, just five days after Evolution. It was clear that WWE was going to spend October building towards two PPVs at the same time.

Evolution turned out to be a great show, but there wasn’t much follow-up for the women’s division on this week’s episode of SmackDown Live. There was a very brief promo from Becky Lynch, as well as a backstage segment between Charlotte Flair and Paige. That was pretty much it. There were zero women’s matches on the Oct. 30 episode of SmackDown Live.

With that fact in mind, I’m now going to write a list of every single SmackDown Live match in October in reverse chronological order, until I finally come across the most recent women’s match:

  1. Jeff Hardy & Rey Mysterio vs. Randy Orton & the Miz (Oct. 30)
  2. R-Truth vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (Oct. 30)
  3. Big E vs. Cesaro (Oct. 30)
  4. AJ Styles vs. Daniel Bryan (Oct. 30)
  5. Jeff Hardy vs. Randy Orton (Oct. 23)
  6. Rey Mysterio vs. the Miz (Oct. 23)
  7. Aiden English vs. Rusev (Oct. 23)
  8. AJ Styles & Daniel Bryan vs. the Usos (Oct. 23)
  9. Big Show vs. Kofi Kingston (Oct. 23)
  10. Rey Mysterio vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (Oct. 16)
  11. New Day vs. the Bar (Oct. 16)
  12. Rusev vs. the Miz (Oct. 16)
  13. AJ Styles & Daniel Bryan vs. the Usos (Oct. 16)
  14. Big Show vs. Randy Orton (Oct. 9)
  15. AJ Styles vs. Shelton Benjamin (Oct. 9)
  16. Jeff Hardy vs. Samoa Joe (Oct. 9)
  17. Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair (Oct. 9)

This list shows that there were zero women’s matches on the Oct. 16, Oct. 23, and Oct. 30 episodes of SmackDown Live. The last women’s match took place a whopping 17 matches ago, when Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair wrestled to a draw in a fight for the SmackDown Women’s Championship.

By my count, seven of these 17 matches are strongly related to the World Cup tournament at Crown Jewel, three matches are strongly related to the Tag Team Championship match at Crown Jewel, and three matches are strongly related to the WWE Championship match at Crown Jewel. That adds up to 13 matches that are heavily related to the stories featured at Crown Jewel.

The only four matches on that list not strongly related to Crown Jewel are Truth vs. Nakamura (Oct. 30), Rusev vs. English (Oct. 23), Styles vs. Benjamin (Oct. 9, and one could argue it’s related to Crown Jewel), and Lynch vs. Flair (Oct. 9).

The actual wrestling matches are only part of the equation when it comes to WWE television, but it’s still a part of the equation that has no representation at all from the women’s division over the last 3 episodes of SmackDown Live. This is partially a reflection of the fact that WWE hasn’t developed any kind of meaningful feuds for the SmackDown women’s division outside of the championship story between Becky and Charlotte. WWE has been busy juggling stories and moments for Evolution, SmackDown 1000, and Crown Jewel, and the entire undercard of the women’s division on Tuesday nights has seemingly been left in the dust.

It’s worth noting that it looked like there was going to be a tag team match on the Oct. 23 episode of SmackDown pitting Asuka & Naomi against Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville, but the match never officially began because the IIconics and others got involved and crashed the scene.

What do you think about this absence of women’s matches, Cagesiders? Is it a glaring problem that needs to be addressed, or is it a fluky result that doesn’t have much meaning?

Lucha Underground’s Ultima Lucha Cuatro, Part 1 Preview & Predictions

Tonight is the night. The culmination of season four begins with Part One of Ultima Lucha Cuatro. Three bouts are on the slate; a bride out for revenge, a Trios Championship tilt, and mask vs mask. Get ready for the action as it airs tonight at 8pm ET on El Rey Network.

If you missed last week’s show, catch up with the recap and reactions and a snazzy summary video from the Lucha Underground YouTube channel. Also, get in the mood with a Dario Cueto GIF tribute.

Let’s run down the card for Part One, tonight.

Mask vs Mask: Killshot vs Son of Havoc

The quick story of this feud begins at Aztec Warfare 4. Dante Fox was missing in action, so Antonio Cueto decided to randomly choose a new partner for the then Trios champs Killshot and Mack. Son of Havoc had the luck of the draw, but Killshot always resented him for it.

The team finally imploded during their title loss to the Reptile Tribe. Killshot cost his team and then had no reason not to go full jerk on Havoc. They tussled a bit in the future. Havoc accidentally removed Killshot’s mask. Killshot did the same on purpose.

It doesn’t take a genius promoter to figure out the next move. A mask vs mask stipulation it is.

I like that Lucha Underground has a genuine mask vs mask feud. The only prior attempt was Sexy Star versus Super Fly, but that was predictable since Super Fly had previously lost his mask in Mexico. For tonight’s main event, I have no clue who will win. That is part of what makes it so interesting.

Prediction: Son of Havoc loses his mask. It is a tough choice. Neither luchador has a positive or negative reason in regard to losing their mask. Both of them would be just fine in either scenario.

I’m picking Havoc, because he has less mystery about him. Killshot is supposedly a soldier for hire in the offseason, so the mask would come in handy. Havoc can still ride his bike on the open road without a mask. Maybe Ivelisse will see Havoc’s face for the first time, and they will finally get back together.

Trios Championship: Reptile Tribe vs Rabbit Tribe vs Ivelisse, XO Lishus, & Sammy Guevara

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

This will be a three-way elimination bout. The defending champion Reptile Tribe consists of Daga, Jeremiah Snake (fka Jeremiah Crane), and Kobra Moon, who has improved tremendously since season three. The Rabbit Tribe is Paul London, El Bunny, and the White Rabbit (aka Killer Kross). The third team needed a replacement for Joey Ryan after he was goozled to the emergency room by the White Rabbit.

I’m crossing my fingers that a fourth team shows up. Famous B mentioned his clients Texano and Dr. Wagner Jr. Those three could be an addition to teach Sammy Guevara a lesson about leaving Infamous Incorporated.

Prediction: The Rabbit Tribe will become new Trios champions. I don’t see any of their opponents being able to match the power of the White Rabbit. I suppose Paul London or El Bunny could be pinned, but the White Rabbit seems too in control to allow that to happen.

Also, someone will be getting the white glove treatment tonight. I predict XO Lishus. He can recuperate next to Joey Ryan and love may bloom over sponge baths.

Taya Mundo vs Ricky Mundo

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

If this will be your first time watching Lucha Underground, Taya and Ricky are not related. Taya took Johnny Mundo’s surname through marriage. Ricky legally changed his last name to garner praise from his idol, Johnny. The desired reaction did not occur.

As to the story behind the match, Ricky was tired of being treated like the chump that he is. With the urging of Rosa the talking doll, Ricky decided to release Matanza to ruin the most magnificent day in wrestling history. The Mundo wedding was crashed, figuratively and literally.

Now, Ricky is out to eliminate the negative influence in Johnny’s life, his wife Taya. When I say negative influence, I mean that Ricky believes Taya is the reason Johnny clowns him.

Prediction: Taya is going to wreck Ricky. Bruised, battered, and bloodied. Belittled and beaten to be a broken shell of a man. I expect Taya to go berserk. I think this match has potential to be the most memorable of Ultima Lucha Cuatro. She could hurt him so bad that it enters territory we’ve never seen before. That’s what happens when you ruin a bride’s wedding.

Enjoy the show tonight at 8pm ET on El Rey Network. Who are you predicting for victory? How many people will end up on a stretcher? With match of the three will steal Part One?

El Rey is available via the cable and satellite providers list on their webpage here. If one of those is your hook-up and you can’t find the channel on your box, reach out to them and ask for it. If you don’t see your provider listed or you’ve cut the cord, you can order the episodes on iTunes here and on Amazon here. Seasons one and two are available on Netflix here.

Cageside Community Star Ratings: Kairi Sane vs. Shayna Baszler

The next match up for debate from Evolution is Kairi Sane versus Shayna Baszler.

Please select a star rating in the poll below and discuss your thoughts on this match in the comments section.

WWE Quietly Advertising Hulk Hogan for Crown Jewel

Without any announcement from WWE, Hulk Hogan was quietly added to list of talent scheduled to appear at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia on Friday.

It’s unclear when Hulk was added to the page, but if he makes an appearance at the event it will be his first time back on WWE TV since the summer of 2015.

Hulk told the Orlando Sentinel last week he was looking forward to going to Saudi Arabia with WWE … but didn’t specify at Crown Jewel. “We’re moving forward at a rapid pace,” Hogan told them. “It’s exciting to have this opportunity again after all these years where I was there and gone.”

In case you missed it, Daniel Bryan and John Cena refused to work the event and were both written out of their scheduled Crown Jewel matches this week on Raw and SmackDown Live

As we first reported yesterday, Renee Young will surprisingly be on the announce team in Riyadh. No word yet, however, on what sort of rules she’ll have to follow due to the country’s numerous regulations for women.

Got thoughts on all of this? Tell us in the comments below.

WWE lists Hulk Hogan as a ‘Featured Superstar’ for Crown Jewel

The man himself said he was headed to Saudi Arabia for WWE, and according to the events page for Crown Jewel this Friday (Nov. 2), that wasn’t another Hulk Hogan tall tale.

Continuing with the under-the-radar promotion we’ve seen for the event since the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi brought even more criticism of WWE’s relationship with the Kingdom, the addition of Hogan to the show was “announced” by quietly adding him on the end of the list of “Featured Superstars” under Crown Jewel on the Tickets & Events section of WWE.com and the WWE mobile app.

WWE.com

There were rumors Hogan’s first WWE appearance since being fired in 2015 for making racist statements on a 2012 tape might come at April’s Greatest Royal Rumble pay-per-view (PPV) in Saudi Arabia. Now, all signs point toward the next step in the return which began with his July Hall of Fame reinstatement happening at this week’s show in the Kingdom.

We’ll keep you posted regarding an official announcement.

During a rough week for WWE fans, focus on some positives

As Crown Jewel draws near, there are plenty of reasons for anger with WWE. Many of which we’ve written about here for the last several weeks.

But we’ve also seen a lot of good lately.

WWE Evolution was not only historic, but great. To see WWE come so far with women’s wrestling that an all-women’s PPV could deliver great matches in front of a good crowd was special.

And we also have seen two competitors with the sway to do so pull out of the event. Daniel Bryan and John Cena have left the event in the dust. Their reasons may be slightly different, but it’s still valuable to see there are competitors who are not willing to put everything aside to do whatever is “the plan.”

There’s also the outpouring of support for Roman Reigns, whose own strength in the face of a terrifying disease has been inspiring. A different kind of difficult time has brought out much good in our little community.

It’s a trying time for wrestling fans. Seeing the thing we love dipped in such ugly issues (often entirely of its own doing) is not an enjoyable experience for anyone. It’s not a surprise to see WWE make the decision to not cancel Crown Jewel, especially with tens of millions of dollars on the table multiple times a year, but it does make enjoyment of “the product” much more difficult.

So, we cling to the positives, the few competitors who chose not to be a part of the action and the women who pulled off a show that seemed impossible until very recently.

And we make our own value judgments on how to proceed with our consumption of WWE. As I wrote yesterday, I believe forcing the conversation to be more valuable than cancelling WWE Network, but I certainly don’t blame anyone for choosing to walk away.

This is a hard week, and part of a hard decade, but try to cling to the positives as best you can if you’re choosing to stick around.

Halfway through the week!

So TakeOver: WarGames needs a women’s match…

Tonight’s show finds us in NXT’s home base of Full Sail Live for the second episode from a taping (spoilers from which are here) which takes us all the way to this year’s TakeOver: WarGames.

Here’s what to expect, and some thoughts on the overall landscape of the black-and-yellow brand.

The Headliner(s)

This is probably a pipe dream, but I know from the Twitter machine I’m not the only one dreaming it. And I imagine its somewhere in the heads of Triple H, his bookers and writers, too. Because the way Shayna Baszler defeated Kairi Sane to become the first two-time Women’s championship at Evolution was a great set-up for another chance to make history.

With only three weeks to a show with WarGames in the title, Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir got hella involved in last Sunday’s match and ensure she reclaimed the title. On the same pay-per-view (PPV), Sane’s Stardom teammate and rival Io Shirai wrestled her biggest WWE match. The ladies were conspicuously absent from the TakeOver card established at the last taping.

As Brock Lesnar once said, “Let’s! Do! This?!?!”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

My fantasy booking would put Dakota Kai – who has a ton of history with Baszler in NXT and more than enough joshi cred – with Io and Kairi, but if we want to go with Stunning Stella Cheeks’ suggestion of a Japanese superteam, I’m down. It’s not like Asuka is doing anything on the main roster anyway.

The other issues, of course, are that two trios usually aren’t enough to fill out a WarGames and that while they’re reportedly prodigies, Duke and Shafir might not be ready for that bright of a spotlight yet. While I’m not sure it makes a ton of storyline sense, dropping Nikki Cross (who will be in action on the Oct. 31 episode, btw) and Bianca Belair into the mix could solve both problems. Make it four-on-four and let the newer Horsewomen focus on what they know and the occassional hardcore spot.

Okay, even as I type that, it sounds crazy dangerous to put a couple of talented-but-green workers in the double cage. But even as I talk myself down, I remain hopefully NXT will find a way to involve Jessamyn and Marina in whatever comes next. The Sane/Baszler rivalry is great, and it has to continue considering how the Queen of Spades won on Sunday, but we could use a break from straight-up singles matches between the two.

And Nov. 17’s show is called WarGames. I’m just sayin’…

The Title Scene

We almost got a new challenger for NXT champion Tommaso Ciampa at the close of last week’s episode, but then General Manager William Regal’s plans fell apart and chaos reigned. Whether Velveteen Dream or Lars Sullivan gets a crack at Ciampa is almost an afterthought, as all eyes will be on how Aleister Black responds to Johnny Gargano superkicking him. Did that mean Gargano was also responsible for August’s parking lot attack? Is the champ just enjoying seeing his old partner slide toward the dark side, or did he play a more hands on role? We probably won’t get a ton of answers, but at least with Aleister’s return, we’re finally moving forward.

Also moving forward is the tag team title feud between Undisputed ERA and War Raiders. Hanson & Rowe won’t get another shot at the belts tonight, but they will have a chance to get revenge against the two men who stopped them from taking the straps from Roderick Strong & Kyle O’Reilly two weeks ago. The Raiders get a shot at Adam Cole & Bobby Fish tonight.

Cole is also still lobbying for a chance to regain the North American championship from Ricochet, seeing as the One and Only pinned United Kingdom champ Pete Dunne during their recent Triple Threat and not him. Ricochet seems willing to fight anyone, anywhere, anytime – but we’ll have to see what Mr. Regal has to say about the future of his regional belt (the Bruiserweight’s strap is the responsibility of NXT UK GM Johnny Saint now).

Other stuff to keep an eye on:

– In other ERA-related business, after EC3 picked up a big win over the Panama City Playboy last week, the foursome attacked. A chairshot to the knee from Fish in particular may have caused serious problems for the One Percenter. Was that a write-off, or the set-up for a feud?

– You’ve seen him in the crowd at TakeOvers and read about his house show debut. Now, Matt Riddle will make his way to the Full Sail ring for the first time on this episode. This will likely just be a squash for the King of Bros, but Kassius Ohno has been angling to be his first major opponent for a while now.

– Your Evolve Tag Team champs will be in action, albeit action which took place before they became your Evolve Tag Team champs. Here, Street Profits will try to get revenge against those chain-stealing, sip-mocking Aussies The Mighty.

– As briefly mentioned above, the Twisted Sister wrestles tonight. Where does a match fit into the stories Nikki Cross is already tangled up in, like being the woman who revealed a secret to Aleister Black, or the persistent thorn in Bianca Belair’s un-de-feat-ed side?

NOTE: Spoilers are out there for these pre-taped broadcasts (including here), but many Cagesiders don’t partake. If you are going to post or discuss spoilers for this show before they happen, or results of future shows, please use the spoiler bar in your comment.

Alright, so… what does an ideal Kenny Omega title reign look like?

So, even though there has only been two matches in Kenny Omega's reign as IWGP champion, a lot of people aren't happy with it so far. I've started to consider what should happen in the future for his time as champion to be more fulfilling, but have a hard time answering that question.

Just to articulate my thoughts on the title defense so far: The match against Ishii at Destruction was good, but not their best. Understandable, though, as they've had at least three incredible matches together since early 2017. I myself didn't want to see Cody in the main event at King of Pro-Wrestling because it seemed obvious that Kota Ibushi would've been a far greater opponent on his own. That by all rights should've been the title defense of the year, if not solely Kenny's career. And also I'd argue that the Cody vs Kenny feud ran its course before the G1, so to me that triple threat was too little, too late. The match just didn't NEED to have Cody it to be exciting and I feel like most fans had already mentally moved on at this point.

Now Tanahashi, even if he doesn't win at WK, will most likely be an excellent foil for Kenny in the main event nonetheless. Those two have every reason to hate each other and so far the build up has been what it should be. The press conference was very good and the Twitter posts have obviously proven controversial. Tana touring with New Japan during the Power Struggle tag league makes him look dedicated while Kenny publicly appearing without the belt makes him look questionable as champ. Meanwhile, the intrigue regarding Kota generates some suspense as well because we don't really know where he fits into all of this. He even addressed backstage recently some frustration towards the booking, New Japan putting him in Kenny's place throughout the tour in multi-man tags against Tana and company. So, I personally think the WK main event, no matter the outcome, will be very interesting. Chances are, we'll be excited for whatever comes next. A lot of combustible elements there.

Moving forward, let's say Kenny retains at WK. What should happen next? Who should he defend against? What should he do as champion that he's not doing already? Just curious to hear what you guys think an ideal Kenny Omega title reign looks like.

I personally don't know what that would look like. Kenny's beaten just about everyone you can beat in this company, except maybe Jay White, who beat him for the US belt already. Okada's never gotten a rematch, Tama Tonga could be a good personal issue driven grudge match regardless of title contention, ZSJ probably has some unresolved issues with Kenny, and Naito would be a good choice to beat Kenny for the title as well. But beyond that, I can't think of anyone, really. That's only 4 more title defenses, which could be New Beginning, Sakura Genesis, Dominion, and King of Pro-Wrestling. I personally would like to see Naito beat Kenny at KOPW and DEFEND the IWGP world championship at WK instead of challenging for it. He doesn't even have to win the G1 for that to happen either. So, that opens up a lot of possibilities for who he'd face at WK as well. What do you guys think?

SmackDown Live recap & reactions: Fallout and Go Home

SmackDown Live waltzed back into our lives last night (Oct. 30) from the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. Find all the results at your mom’s favorite live blog here.

WWE Title Match

The shadow of Crown Jewel completely covered the opening segment of the show. And that opening segment was a full length WWE title match between AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan.

If you don’t remember the championship story they’ve been telling, let me sum it up for you:

“Hey, opponent, let’s team up for no reason. Hey did you hit me on purpose?”

“No… I mean yes!”

OK, you’re caught up.

The match itself was very good. Of course it was. It’s Daniel Bryan vs. AJ Styles. But I wasn’t as into it as I wish I were. Part of it is the weird Crown Jewel news about Bryan not going to Saudi Arabia and wondering how they were going to address that. Knowing all that made this just the answer to that question and stripped away the feeling of a meaningful title match. Another reason is the lackluster story. And then there’s the fact that both AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan have lost some luster in the last few months on SmackDown.

Bryan tapped clean, effectively ending the feud for now. I had wondered if they were going to have Miz interfere in their match at Crown Jewel, keeping Bryan protected. Here they obviously did not.

Afterwards, Samoa Joe attacked both men, which is the typical blueprint for setting up a triple threat match. But that triple threat match won’t be happening at Crown Jewel. No that’ll be Joe vs AJ and likely Joe failing to win the title from Styles yet again. (It’s kind of his thing at this point.)

The Man

Champion Becky Lynch (who has taken to calling herself “The Man” and who am I to stop her?) cut a promo on Ronda Rousey tonight. This brief minute promo was the only women’s segment on the show that’s a fallout of Evolution.

After listening to the champ spit straight fire at Rousey, one has to wonder if they don’t allow Ronda to promo battle her prior to their match. Badlass Becky is a natural on the mic. Ronda still seems to be finding her pro wrestling voice with scripted lines designed to pop the crowd but lacking the conviction she really needs. In short, she’d run the risk of getting shredded by Becky.

Becky will also be able to pro wrestle circles around Ronda, but surely will be tasked to help the Raw champion look good. (Not to put down Rousey, who has looked very good for being so new, but Bex is a veteran.)

I’m excited for this feud, but at this point, I’m excited for anything Becky does. Ronda has come out looking a head above all her opponents up to now, but I don’t see that happening against Lynch. The Lasskicker is the hottest thing going in the WWE, and it feels like we’re witnessing something special with her. Ronda is going to be challenged to keep up. I’m looking forward to seeing if she can.

World Cup

The four SmackDown members in the World Cup tournament had a pretty meaningless tag match in the main event of the show. It was right after Becky’s fire promo. It kind of felt like the champ was the main event and then USA network opted to air the meaningless dark match.

There was an interesting addition to the SmackDown side of the World Cup. Shane McMahon threatened to fire the SmackDown finalist if they don’t win the entire thing. Harsh, but at the same time, very McMahon.

But does that mean a heel like Miz gets himself DQ’d in the first match to protect his job? Does that choreograph a blue brand win or is someone moving to Raw to make up for the void left by Roman Reigns?

The Rest:

Trick or Street Fight: Halloween is tomorrow so of course we get a gimmick street fight. Just like we’ll get a food fight next month for Thanksgiving. The New Day are perfect for a match like this and their entrance as the Brood may have been the best part, though the entire segment was fun.

US Champion: A gentleman who goes by the name Shinsuke Nakamura and is apparently the United States champion defeated R-Truth in a non-title match. There was a dance break for R-Truth, but he couldn’t defeat this Nakamura character, who again, is United States champion. Did you know that?

For a show that opened with a title match, I was overall underwhelmed with the show. The title match was very good, but given all that surrounded it, it didn’t feel like the big deal it should have. Becky’s promo was great, but it’s disappointing to hear them hype up Sunday’s historic Evolution while barely featuring any women. And while the main event was fun, it was pretty inconsequential.

Grade: C+

Sound off below.

Rumor Roundup: Early TLC card, World Cup change, Trish/Lita, Women’s tag belts

Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.

Important reminder: Rumors are just that — rumors. None of this has been confirmed as legitimate news or fact, it’s just circulating around the pro wrestling rumor mill. We track rumor accuracy in a weekly feature called Rumor Look Back you can find here. Remember, take it all with a grain of salt.

Rumors for the Day:

  • Early advertisements from San Jose’s SAP Center for Dec. 16’s TLC have the top matches as Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins for the Intercontinental Championship, Ronda Rousey vs. Nia Jax for the Raw Women’s Championship and Braun Strowman vs. Drew McIntyre.
  • Before John Cena backed out of Crown Jewel, the World Cup field wasn’t going to be sorted by Raw and SmackDown, according to PW Insider. The decision was made so the final could serve as a preview of Survivor Series.
  • While they look to be done for now, Trish Stratus & Lita are expected back in 2019. Insider says there were plans at one point for Team Bestie at WrestleMania 35.
  • Even though it didn’t happen at Evolution, there’s still talk of Women’s Tag Titles, especially after reports WWE officials were handing out the “We Want Women’s Tag Championships” signs seen at the PPV.
  • The ankle injury Shayna Baszler suffered at Evolution was minor, according to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Live. She’s not expected to miss TakeOver: WarGames.

If you have heard of any interesting rumors that you’d like to add, feel free to post them in the comments section below. Just remember they are rumors and not confirmed as fact, so please take them as such. Have fun with it. And check our weekly Rumor Look Back here to keep track of how often rumors turn out to be correct!

GIF: Orton destroys Mysterio with a RKO

Two days after Evolution, the WWE for the most part ignored the women’s division on this week’s episode of SmackDown.

In the main event, the foursome of Jeff Hardy, Rey Mysterio, Randy Orton and The Miz once again crossed paths. Sure, Shane McMahon added some stakes earlier in the night for the four men competing on the SmackDown side of the WWE World Cup bracket, but this tag match was still a strange way to finish off Tuesday night.

If nothing else at least the match gave of us this GIF of Orton RKO-ing Mysterio straight through the mat.

And again

Love that Rey Mysterio is back in the WWE, hate that we can’t stop watching him get destroyed by Randy Orton on a never ending loop.

Wearing an ‘I’m The Man’ tee, Lynch cuts a promo on Rousey

Becky Lynch should not lose to Ronda Rousey at Survivor Series.

We already knew the WWE was giving us a champion vs. champion women’s super-fight at Survivor Series, but tonight (Oct. 30) on SmackDown Lynch officially kicked off her feud with Rousey.

With only 19 days away until Survivor Series 2018, the SmackDown women’s champion kept her first verbal jab at Rousey short and sweet.

“I didn’t come here to cosplay or talk about a reality TV show. I’m just walking into Survivor Series to rip your arm off.”

Lynch star’s is still rising and ‘The Man’ shouldn’t lose to Rousey or anyone currently on the WWE roster. Becky Lynch has climbed to the top of the mountain all by herself, there is no need to kick her down even a single inch.

Styles asks for & gets Joe at Crown Jewel

Ask and you shall receive in the land of opportunity.

Samoa Joe just got himself another shot at the WWE championship tonight (Oct. 30) and all it took was a well timed sneak attack. After Joe choked out AJ Styles, following a win over Daniel Bryan, the champ would take it upon himself to play matchmaker.

During a backstage segment with Paige, Styles demanded he get his hands on Joe this Friday at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia. The SmackDown GM thought about not rewarding Joe for his actions but instead sided with Styles.

They took a winding road to get there, but this is how the WWE chose to handle Bryan reportedly refusing to work Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia.

Daniel Bryan Written Out of Crown Jewel With Early WWE Championship Match

Just like John Cena on Raw this week, Daniel Bryan was written out of his match at Crown Jewel during tonight’s episode of SmackDown Live.

Shane McMahon kicked off the show by announcing Daniel would wrestle AJ Styles for the WWE Championship in the opening match, instead of at Crown Jewel.

Styles ultimately retained, but Samoa Joe attacked both competitors when the match was over. Later in the evening, AJ told Paige he wants to wrestle Joe at Crown Jewel and the match became official.

As we previously reported, both John Cena and Bryan allegedly refused to work the upcoming event in Saudi Arabia due to controversy surrounding the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Cena was written out of the World Cup Tournament on Raw and replaced by Bobby Lashley.

If SmackDown doesn’t win the World Cup, somebody’s getting FIRED

Crown Jewel’s World Cup To Determine The Best In The World™ just got some stakes, at least for the blue side of the bracket:

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Commissioner Shane McMahon is going with the stick instead of the carrot to motivate his troops. Whether it’s Jeff Hardy, The Miz, Rey Mysterio or Randy Orton in the final against Seth Rollins, Bobby Lashley, Kurt Angle or Dolph Ziggler, that person needs to win, or they’ll need to find a new place of employment.

Of course, that would probably be Stephanie McMahon’s Raw. And with only a few weeks to go until “the one night of the year where Raw and SmackDown LIVE Superstars compete in head-to-head competition” (except for Crown Jewel, and the other times they compete in head-to-head competition), the prospect of a new free agent does make things pretty interesting.

Is that enough to get you invested in the tournament which will take place Fri., Nov. 2 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia?

Tye Dillinger injured, headed to surgery

He was supposed to be facing Shinsuke Nakamura for the United States title on television tonight (Oct. 30). Instead of appearing on SmackDown in Atlanta, however, Tye Dillinger is reportedly in Birmingham, Alabama getting ready to undergo surgery on an injured hand.

WWE broke the news of both the injury and the cancellation of the bout with Nakamura. PWInsider reported that the Perfect Ten hurt his hand on Monday night’s house show in Macon, Georgia, and brought word Dillinger’s already in Alabama prepping for an operation on his hand.

Neither source provided any information on the exact nature of the injury, or a timetable for his rehabilitation and return.

Bryan taps during impromptu title match vs. Styles

That’s one way to handle the elephant in the room.

The WWE addressed their issue with Daniel Bryan head on in the opening the segment of this week’s episode of SmackDown. Reports from earlier in the day stated that Bryan would not be traveling to Saudi Arabia on Friday.

The show kicked off with AJ Style coming to the ring and calling out Bryan.

Champion and challenger quickly went nose to nose and looked like neither man wanted to wait until Friday at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia. Before the two men could come to blows, SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon came out to put his two cents in.

McMahon proclaimed if the two men couldn’t wait they should fight right here, right now at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The Commissioner called for a referee to come down and the match began just like that.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

In one of the first exchanges of the mach it appeared that Bryan tweaked his knee during a suicide dive attempt on Styles. For the rest of the match, the WWE Champion would work over the left knee of the challenger.

The match as a whole was everything you could expect from a Bryan versus Styles inside a pro wrestling ring. Both men brought their A-game and it included some nasty, stiff spots throughout the 20 minute bout.

This match should have been the main event of a WrestleMania but fans got it as the opening contest of a SmackDown in October.

In the back half of the match, Bryan threatened Styles with multiple submission attempts. Transitioning from a tight armbar into a YES Lock, Bryan looked moments away from getting Styles to tap.

The champ wiggled out and hit a Styles Clash before rolling into right into a Calf Crusher on the injured knee of Bryan. Stuck in the middle of the ring, Bryan tapped out.

Post-match, Samoa Joe came out of the crowd and choked out both Styles and Bryan. The segment ended with the WWE not making any clear decision on if AJ Styles or Daniel Bryan would still be competing this Friday at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia.

Renee Young reportedly travelling to Saudi Arabia to call Crown Jewel

Not sure how this will work exactly, but it’s a good public relations move for WWE. And it would seem to actually lend some credence to their oft-stated claim they’re bringing change to Saudi Arabia with their presence in the Kingdom.

Pro Wrestling Sheet is reporting Raw announcer Renee Young will travel with the company to Riyadh and work commentary for the controversy-plagued Crown Jewel pay-per-view (PPV) there on Fri., Nov. 2. The site’s sources told them WWE has been working to make this happen since Young was added to the desk full-time last month. They did not get any details of how Young will be able to work the show given the Kingdom’s restrictions on what women can and can’t do.

We know performing in the ring is definitely something women can’t do in Saudi Arabia, and we also learned from April’s Greatest Royal Rumble that showing women on screen in their usual wrestling gear is also a big no-no.

Those questions will likely be answered soon, as WWE will definitely want to publicize Young’s role in order to counteract negative press they’ve received for their contract with Saudi Arabia in general, and specifically for the decision to go forward with Crown Jewel after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Taya’s returning to AAA for a new Facebook wrestling show

Taya will be joined by Fenix and Pentagon Jr. in a special 24 luchador tournament.

In a lucha libre bombshell, Taya Valkyrie tweeted that she will be returning to AAA.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Taya left AAA in Summer 2017 after they did her dirty. She has always had a deep love for Mexico, but a return looked bleak. However, the wrestling industry is one in that time heals all wounds.

Taya will be part of a newly announced 24 luchador Lucha Capital international tournament. The competition is scheduled to air each Wednesday over eight consecutive weeks live on Facebook. It begins this Wednesday (October 31) at 8:30pm local Mexico City time. The Great Pumpkin could not have picked a better present to bring on Halloween.

Time note: Mexico did the daylight savings time change last Sunday. The October 31 show will air at 10:30pm ET in the USA. After the US changes their time next Sunday (Nov. 4), the November 7 show, and beyond, will air at 9:30pm ET.

The full field will be Taya, Psycho Clown, Murder Clown, Pagano, Taurus, Pentagon Jr., Puma King, Vanilla Vargas, La Hiedra, Killer Kross, Hijo del Vikingo, Laredo Kid, Drago, Aerostar, Maximo, Lady Shani, Lady Maravilla, Fenix, Golden Magic, Texano Jr., Niño Hamburguesa, Australian Suicide, Mascarita Sagrada, and Keyra.

Lucha Libre AAA

If I understand the press release correctly, the tournament will have a point system. The first three weeks in stage one will be one-on-one matches with the winner earning three points. Stage two’s three weeks will be more one-on-one matches with winners also earning three points. If a luchador has six points, they will move on to the grand finale. All luchadores with three points will compete in stage three (one week) for a special night worth five points. I’m unclear about what stage three entails exactly.

The final night (Dec. 19) will feature seven matches to determine the finals and overall winner. Four fights will be three-ways, which must mean that half the field will make it to this round. Those winners will have one-on-one matches leading to an ultimate one-on-one affair, i.e. a four luchador bracket.

The action kicks off October 31 with:

  • Taurus vs Pagano
  • Vanilla Vargas vs La Hiedra
  • Psycho Clown vs Murder Clown
  • Puma King vs Pentagon Junior

As a bonus treat, Vampiro will be live on commentary. If his Spanish announcing is anything like his English style in Mexico, it should be a barrel of laughs.

How excited are you to see Taya in a AAA ring again? Who is your pick to win the Lucha Capital tournament?

Renee Young to Join Crown Jewel Announce Team in Saudi Arabia

Pro Wrestling Sheet has learned Renee Young has been given the green light to join the Raw announce team and is set to travel to Saudi Arabia for Friday’s event.

Sources tell us WWE began working to make this happen in September after the female announcer made history joining the Raw commentary desk.

It’s unclear if Renee will have certain guidelines or rules to follow because of the country’s numerous restrictions for women.

This comes after John Cena and Daniel Bryan refused to work the event due to the Saudi government’s involvement in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Cena has been replaced by Bobby Lashley in the upcoming World Cup tournament.

As you may recall, women were not allowed to perform at Greatest Royal Rumble and the Saudi General Sports Authority even had to release a public apology after the event due to Bayley, Sasha Banks and Carmella being shown on the big screen wearing their ring gear.

Hall of Famer Lita additionally called WWE’s relationship with the Saudi Arabian government a direct conflict of interest at the time due to the company’s public push for female empowerment.

Do you think the addition of Renee on commentary changes that? Tell us in the comments below.

Big names don’t equal big numbers for Raw

WWE ran into some good fortune when the World Series ended Sunday night, and they were also gifted with a non-competive NFL game as competition for this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw. The Oct. 29 episode served as both the show after a pay-per-view (PPV) event – Sunday’s Evolution – and before one – Nov. 2’s Crown Jewel. There was also the cliffhanger provided by the latest disintegration of The Shield following Roman Reigns’ shocking announcement last week, and the promise of big names like Undertaker, Brock Lesnar and Shawn Michaels on the show.

Unfortunately, that didn’t do much for viewership. The audience fell a bit from last week’s 2.54 million to 2.47 million. The hourly breakdown shows that folks tuned it at the start, ut didn’t stick around as the show went along:

Hour one: 2.72 million
Hour two: 2.46 million
Hour three: 2.24 million

There’s only a couple shows left before Survivor Series, and then WWE will get the usual holiday downturn.

Cageside Community Star Ratings: Toni Storm vs. Io Shirai

The next match up for debate from Evolution is Toni Storm versus Io Shirai.

Please select a star rating in the poll below and discuss your thoughts on this match in the comments section.

Actually, Dean is the one poised to make Seth’s life a living hell

On Raw last night (Oct. 29), Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose delivered an excellent follow-up to Ambrose’s shocking assault of Rollins at the close of the Oct. 22 episode.

My colleagues Alex Briggs and Tommy Messano have already heaped praise on the segment, which saw Seth demanded an explanation from Dean for an attack which came hours after their Shield brother Roman Reigns announced the return of his leukemia and moments after the captured the tag team titles.

The title of WWE’s YouTube clip for the scene, which uses a line the Architect delivers to his friend-turned-rival also got me thinking. And it also ties into a few thoughts Rollins dropped earlier in his promo…

“… if I’m being honest, that makes me feel a little guilty. Because I’ve been wondering all week if maybe that wasn’t my fault. You know, maybe what I did four years ago, Ambrose just couldn’t forgive that. Maybe he held that inside, maybe he let it fester and maybe he lashed out. Maybe it was a wrong place, wrong time, wrong person situation – I don’t know. I feel frustrated, I feel confused, and the only person who has the answers is Dean Ambrose.

The problem with that is, Dean Ambrose is the kind of guy that if he doesn’t want to be found, he’s not gonna be found. So I didn’t call, I didn’t text because one thing I did know for sure was that I could find Dean Ambrose here tonight. So Ambrose I am asking you as a friend, as a brother, come on out here and tell us why. You wanted the spotlight, Dean. It’s all yours. Come down here and have it.”

It’s when the don’t-call-him-a-Lunatic appears that we get to Seth’s vow. See, Ambrose isn’t going to provide the answers Rollins wants. And that drives the Kingslayer crazy…

“You know what man? You really are a cold-hearted bastard. On the most emotional night in the history of The Shield you spat on us, on everything we stand for. A night when Roman leaves to battle leukemia and you make it all about you. Somehow, some way- you make it all about you, Ambrose! You know what? You want the spotlight? You want it so bad, you sick, selfish son of a – I swear – you want it so bad? Well you got it. Because I am fixed on you for as long as I live, and I am gonna make your life a living hell!”

Setting aside for now that Seth is accusing Dean of making this all about him MOMENTS AFTER HE MADE THIS ALL ABOUT HIMSELF – mostly because I don’t want to get into another Becky/Charlotte debate, and because hopefully we can all agree that even if Rollins is more than a little full of himself, Ambrose is the bad guy here. A relateable bad guy, sure, but if you didn’t want to see them celebrate instead of fight last Monday, your heart is as cold as Dean’s.

Anyway… while the Intercontinental champ is promising to make Ambrose’s life hell, it appears Dean has actually figured out how to torture Seth. Not simply by betraying him, or reminding him of his own treachery from 2014. But by not giving him the satisfaction of knowing to what extent his own actions contributed to their current circumstances.

Either a villainous speech full of moustache-twirling or an emo one about a broken heart give Rollins, and us, some closure. Silently lurking in the shadows like a passive aggressive crow Sting? That’s torture.

And a helping of revenge served very, very cold.

Will WWE stick with this for any length of time, or rush things along with an Ambrose promo next Monday? Probably the latter. But at least for a few more days, Seth is a prisoner of his own imagination. And Dean is making his life a living hell.

Corporate executive repeats company line

Her father may not have anything else to say on the matter, but Stephanie McMahon-Levesque did answer a question from Sky News about WWE’s decision to go ahead with Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia despite the international uproar surrounding the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi’s Turkish consulate.

But WWE’s Chief Brand Officer might as well have repeated Vince McMahon’s line about having nothing to add to the statement in the company’s 2018 3Q financial releases announcing that the show will go on in Riyadh this Friday (Nov. 2). Because she really didn’t have much to add:

“Moving forward with Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia was an incredibly tough decision, given that heinous act. But, at the end of the day, it is a business decision and, like a lot of other American companies, we decided that we’re going to move forward with the event and deliver Crown Jewel for all of our fans in Saudi Arabia and around the world.”

If that’s not enough breaking news for you, Steph also talked to Newsweek about WWE’s Women’s Evolution and this past Sunday’s Evolution pay-per-view (PPV). And her statement there will also come as a surprise to absolutely no one who follows the company:

“In terms of the Women’s Evolution in the WWE, if it’s a success like we know it will be, this can absolutely become an annual event.

There’s so much we can do with the women in the WWE. We need to continue to grow our roster, continue to reach out to all these women who are unsung heroes all over the world. Many were able to perform in the Mae Young Classic and to show all of us what they got and they absolutely steal the show every time. We can do anything we want to do. I hope for Evolution 2, Mae Young Classic 3, women’s programming on the network, main eventing Wrestlemania, and true gender parity and equality in our roster.”

So there you have it. Again.

Celebrate Lucha Underground’s birthday with a Dario Cueto GIF party!

October 29, 2014 marked Lucha Underground’s television debut. We have one man to thank for that. El Jefe, Dario Cueto. It was his genius as a wrestling promoter that his legacy will be judged. Unfortunately, Dario’s life was cut short by ‘gang bangers.’

For the birthday of Lucha Underground, and with just a day until the Weds., Oct. 31 premiere of the fourth edition of Dario’s greatest creation (Ultima Lucha), let’s celebrate El Jefe’s presence with a GIF tribute. For the sake of ease, I only compiled ones from the official Lucha Underground Twitter account.

Grab a drink.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Spend time with friends.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

And have a laugh.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Let’s do this!

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Dario Cueto was a man of many talents. He was a mic tossing, key wearing, pull-up doing son of a gun. Dario even had his own cereal line. His greatest accomplishment was being the owner and proprietor of Lucha Underground.

Dario was a business man who kept his cool, even when hot heads messed his desk or being in the presence of dragons. It was always about putting on a fantastic show for the Believers.

Dario loved a good fight.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

It showed in the product he produced. At times, the best fight involved Dario and his beloved brother Matanza.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Times were up, times were down. Times were fun with Antonio Cueto’s son. No matter what happened in the Temple, always remember one thing.

If I’ve learned anything in four years of watching Lucha Underground, it would be to never say never. Dario Cueto may be gone for now, but that doesn’t mean he is gone forever. Weirder things have happened than a routine resurrection.

What were your favorite Dario moments? Where does he rank in the annals of wrestling history as a promoter extraordinaire?

Becky ‘unleashed a vicious assault on’ Ronda & all we got is a lousy website blurb

Chalk it up to “plans change”. Maybe even consider it for your comment debates about whether WWE is presenting Becky Lynch as a heel or a neutral “Austin-like” asskicker.

But at some point, someone told the staff at WWE.com they should include this storyline detail in their preview for Survivor Series’ upcoming showdown between The Champ and Raw Women’s titleholder Ronda Rousey:

“However, the Rowdy titleholder’s celebration was short-lived; just moments after she and Becky stood triumphantly side-by-side along with the rest of the female Superstars in the culmination of the monumental event, The Irish Lass Kicker unleashed a vicious assault on her fellow champion backstage.

In the likely event this gets corrected at some point, here’s a screenshot:

WWE.com

Folks watching on USA Network or following along with us here at cSs know a vicious post-Evolution assault isn’t what we actually saw on Raw last night (Oct. 29) when WWE announced the match for Nov. 18:

Why the change? Did WWE not want to make Ronda look weak, or naive for falling victim to another unexpected attack by a future challenger (she’s just shared a friendly looking moment on stage with Lynch before the above exchange happened) after the Nikki Bella feud started the same way?

Or is this more evidence of a “softening” of Becky’s edges to align her with the support she’s receiving from the WWE Universe?

Maybe we’ll find out tonight on SmackDown. Plans will probably only change two or three times between now and then.

Conversation trumps cancellation for WWE Crown Jewel

For all the articles I’ve written about WWE’s profit over people trip to Saudi Arabia for Crown Jewel and what’s likely to be another day of pro-abusive government propaganda on Fri., Nov. 2, I’m not advocating for cancelling your WWE Network subscription.

Hell, I’m not even suggesting you abstain from watching the show.

The event is happening, if you are a wrestling fan, there’s reason to want to watch the event. And you can absolutely watch without supporting the attached propaganda. In fact, the greatest weapon in the arsenal of those who oppose the show is not cancellation, it’s discussion.

Discussing the WWE’s decision to move forward with their relationship to a government that touts their “progressive” decision to allow women to drive and then jails women who protested for that very right, that executes activists and minorities at an almost unheard of rate, that murdered and dismembered a journalist on foreign soil — discussing those things and making it impossible for the story to just “go away” is valuable.

There are discussions to be had surrounding the old idea that there is “no ethical consumption under capitalism.” And the idea is front-and-center in many corners of the entertainment world.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is freshly out and Rockstar Games going back to the well of forcing employees to undergo “crunch” (ridiculously long hours down the final days/weeks/months/year of a game) to complete the game is an abusive labor practice. This was discussed widely among gaming media and between gamers, and while no one wants to support a company that does this, people also want to play the game, experience the art and ultimately support the developers whose bonuses are tied to the performance of the game.

These are not one-to-one comparisons by any means, but the fact is most forms of entertainment come with an ugly side — though most don’t actively involve paid propaganda from a repressive government.

From a 2017 article at Medium by Dr. Eleanor A. Lockhart:

I don’t believe in a moral imperative to boycott anything. Perhaps I’m wrong about this; perhaps I should cancel my Netflix subscription over the racism in Iron Fist and a number of other original features by the service. But I’m not going to do that, because I’m a storytelling animal, as rhetorician Kenneth Burke famously described all humans. I need stories to live — to make sense of my world. As an autistic, ADHD person with PTSD, I really need stories. So I’m going to consume them when Netflix and Newscorp and Warner Brothers and Disney crank them out. But, I agree with the axiom insofar as it says that if I were to find some particular liberation in Iron Fist, that doesn’t excuse its racism or make me watching it a support of any moral agenda besides me having fun.

I usually try to frame this in a positive light: paying for good things is good, paying for kinda bad things, as long as they’re not reprehensible, is fine as long as you personally get some real benefit. But I think the moment we say there isn’t any way to ethically create change within the capitalist system, we leave one of two options: we somehow escape or defeat capitalism (anyone up for an underwater city? That’d work well I bet!) or we simply give up and support bad, harmful things without question or criticism.

Far more effective than taking your $9.99 away from the network when WWE has massive TV deals and roughly $40 million from this show alone is simply forcing the spotlight to remain.

The conversation being had by wrestling fans and media is what led to the story being picked up by larger mainstream media outlets and that attention potentially leads to pressure from sponsors, network partners and influencers the WWE actually cares about.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The fight isn’t over because Crown Jewel will go on. We just can’t let the Saudi deal fade into the background once it’s over, it will pop up again and again for the next decade and the discussion and pressure should be constant.

And know that without that pressure, WWE wouldn’t hide the words “Saudi Arabia” away like some evil curse and John Cena & Daniel Bryan may go along with business as usual just like Greatest Royal Rumble.

The conversation matters.

Go forth and conquer your Tuesday.
