Matt Hardy tells Vanguard 1 to prepare for The Great War

Another Famous Member of the “Broken” Universe Joining Matt Hardy?

As we noted yesterday, WWE is currently working on a retooled version of the “Broken” character for Matt Hardy to use in WWE. The character will play off Hardy’s Impact Wrestling character, but is likely to be referred to as “woken” as opposed to “broken”.

We also noted that Senor Benjamin, Reby Hardy’s father, reacted to Hardy’s new “condition”, and it appears as if Vanguard 1 has been “woken” as well, as seen in the following Tweet.

Matt Hardy did note on social media after his “breakdown” on Raw this week that the “Great War” has begun in WWE, and needs “loyal soldiers” to join him, leading to speculation that other names from the “broken universe” might be joining him on Raw. Early today we noted that plans for Jeff Hardy upon his return from injury include him joining Matt’s new character:

New Day gives the most passionate speech about Funko toys you will hear all year

Think about what you love most in life and whatever that person, place or thing is it does compare to the amount of love The New Day has for Funko collectibles.

So you love puppies, chocolate desserts, your first born child or helping the less fortunate but that level of passion comes no where close to how much Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston and Big E adore Funko’s brand of tiny pop culture toys.

Just listen to the all-consuming passion The New Day has when they cut a promo on Funko.

Something in our heart, something in our soul now makes us want to spend 70 to 80% of our next paycheck on cute Funko pop culture collectibles. Thank you, New Day.

AJ Styles again addresses retirement rumors

The Internet can be a strange at times. Okay, most of the time. If we’re being honest all the time. The latest example of the internet running wild is AJ Styles addressing the rumors of him returning after WrestleMania 34.

Come again now?

First up the original “report” that caught the WWE champion’s attention was covered yesterday and shot down by The Phenomenal one himself.

Today is a new day (yes it is) and Styles is once again giving traction to those fans whispering about his retirement.

But wait there’s more as the 40-year-old Styles is at least giving Curt Hawkins the rub on his way out the door; which will be one day but not anytime soon.

There you have it. AJ Styles is not retiring anytime soon unless he addresses it again this week in a new, creative or interesting way.

This was not how Naomi wanted to spend her 30th birthday. Likely stuck in some hospital bed thanks to a steel steps facial at the hands of the Riott Squad this past week on SmackDown, Naomi did manage to get some words out to her new rivals.

After the WWE wished her a Happy Birthday on Twitter, using her one uninjured finger Naomi was able to type a warning shot directed at SmackDown’s recent trio of NXT call-ups.

Then all three members of the Riott Squad struck back.

Christian Talks Chris Jericho vs Kenny Omega, If Jericho Still Has What It Takes to Be the Best

Chris Jericho

Former WWE star Christian recently spoke with Kevin Kelly for Title Match Wrestling, and you can watch the entire interview below. The following are some interview highlights:

On whether or not he feels Chris Jericho, at his age, can face Kenny Omega and still prove that he is the best:

“Oh for sure. I think as you get older, and I can attest to this, you find different ways to be great if you physically can’t do the things you could do before. You’re wily enough, you’re smart enough, you have enough experience to figure out different things and different ways. And I don’t even think Chris has lost that big of a step physically. He’s very durable, he’s never really been injured. Even when he’s gone back for his previous runs with WWE, he didn’t look like he missed a day, to me, and he could still go out there and do 25, 30, 40 minutes if he needed to.”

His overall feeling of the Jericho vs Omega bout:

“Honestly, I think this is a great thing for the business as a whole that this is even happening and I think it also legitimizes how good Kenny Omega has been the past year or so. Because I don’t think Chris Jericho would be doing this if Kenny wasn’t the real deal.”

The Rock nerds out talking about an amazing Hulk Hogan story

If the current President of the United States of America is a huge pro wrestling fan, then maybe our next commander-in-chief can be an even bigger pro wrestling nerd. Cody Rhodes On Racist Wrestling Fans and Racism in America, If He Regrets Bullet Club’s Raw ‘Invasion’

Cody Rhodes

Ring of Honor Champion Cody Rhodes recently spoke with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated’s Extra Mustard, and below are some interview highlights:

On racism in pro wrestling, and the current climate in America:

“It bothers me, but even surprises me when racism pops up,” said Rhodes. “I had a fan tweet to tell me he’d been a fan for a long time, but he had the Confederate flag as his profile picture. I said, ‘Hey man, you’ve got to get rid of that,’ and he did, but what surprised me about that interaction was the amount of apologists who defended what the Confederate flag actually stood for. That always surprises me–that there are still apologists, essentially, for racism.

“We don’t need to be educating people on the Confederate flag, it just needs to be gone. In Germany, there are not swastikas on every corner. That part of their past is history and they’ve progressed. I’m always shocked when I see apologists for racism, which has no place. We’re all in this together. Why would we ever divide?”

On if he regrets Bullet Club ‘invading’ Raw back in September:

“People should watch it, because it’s done in the context of ‘Being The Elite’, which was almost a parody of what was done very well by Degeneration X in 1998. I definitely don’t have any regrets. It’s unfortunate if it upset some people, which it did, but I don’t have any regrets. We had a permit to film, so this wasn’t as guerrilla style as people think it was. It was about ‘Being The Elite’ more than it was about being against WWE. No regrets.”

Edge On a Possible Second Season Of WWE Network Show

The status of Edge & Christian’s comedy show on WWE Network, which aired only one season, has been up in the air since the conclusion of the debut season.

Edge recently spoke with Sports Illustrated and offered the following comment on a possible second season of the show:

“In terms of where we could have time to film it and fit it in, that was the big difficulty,” said Edge, whose drama series, Vikings, premieres its fifth season tonight on the History channel. “The show was a lot of work, but we had a great time with it.

“We wrote it, produced it, directed it, and were really hands-on. There were 14-hour days and it was pretty intensive from a time perspective. There are still talks, and they want to do it.”

“If I can somehow cram it in, we’ll make it happen,” said Edge. “We have a hiatus on Vikings over the summer, so maybe I could squeeze it in there, but I want to spend time with my family, too. It’s a matter of trying to juggle all these things, but the top priority is being dad and partner, and then comes acting and any other commitments, all the while doing the podcast, too. It’s a matter of wearing a lot of hats, but I just don’t know if my head is big enough for all of them.”

Lio Rush removes WWE/NXT wording from his social media profiles

Congratulations Lio Rush you’re back in the news again. The last time we heard from NXT high flyer Lio Rush the pro wrestling Internet was piling on him for a classless Emma joke.

Besides everyone collectively shaking their heads at him, Rush had one match versus The Velveteen Dream on the October 11th episode of NXT.

Other than some NXT house shows, Rush has manged to not rock the boat on social media (or on TV) since he publicity shamed for talking about Emma after she was released from the WWE.

Caught by a savvy Reddit pro wrestling fan not only was Rush not at any of the NXT tapings that took place this week, the 23-year-old also has removed all mentions of WWE and NXT from his social media profiles.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Rush’s popular Instagram page also has not mention of WWE or NXT listed in his bio.

The WWE has cut ties for less than a social media blunder, is this just Lio Rush working on a new gimmick or is it possible he is no longer employed by the WWE?

I was lucky enough to meet a guy named Pat Gowen who is now a local Emmy Award winning anchor for CBS 3 in Philadelphia. And, a guy called Corey Seidman… I mad met them online through Twitter and through visiting PhilliesNation.com which had been an established website. I had gotten the opportunity to write for them. In the first year, we were USA Today’s #1 Baseball BLog in the country which was a nice feather in our cap. And then, from there, I had a friend who had worked for Conan O’Brien and he was looking to continue his dream his well as a stand up comedian. He had created a public access show called Hump Night with Chris Fried. It was a really fun local show. Made some good connections at Service Electric. So, after I had joined the Phillies blog, we started to do some video blogs. They were pretty decent and high quality. I said, “Hey, why don’t we take these to Service Electric and see if we can get on the air with these?” Sure enough, we did. Through that, I was able to meet pretty much anybody and everybody from that Phillies run. My favorite of which being Cole Hamels – Such a great athlete but also so generous with his time. And then, Carlos Ruiz and the recently passed Roy Halladay who was a great guy to be around and speak to. It was a great time to be around baseball and be around those guys. It was really cool to be around baseball which was always my first love.”

On entering wrestling:

“Those opportunities, oddly enough, lead me to professional wrestling. I was interviewing famous Phillies fans including the Blue Meanie and Mark Summers. The Blue Meanie, of course, lead me to the Monster Factory which lead me to all the madness that is happening now. (laughs) The Blue Meanie has a lot to do with it. He doesn’t like to take credit. But, he is the one that brought me to the Monster Factory. He is the one who instilled the confidence in me to ask those questions and to go down this route.”

On transitioning from baseball to wrestling:

“We transitioned from baseball to wrestling pretty quick! (laughs) For a while, for about 3 years, I did both and even put out a book, “The 100 Greatest Phillies of All Time”.

On his tryout with Ring of Honor:

“Ring of Honor, at that time, was not looking for announcers. They were looking for folks to come in for the Top Prospects tournament which was coming up in about 5 months. Out of the first camp I went to, Punishment Martinez who is now in Ring of Honor, Donovan Dijak who is currently in (WWE) NXT, Dalton Castle came out of that camp as well. A number of guys you’ve seen on RIng of Honor throughout the years came out of that camp which is kind of crazy. (laughs) The Ring of Honor camps are certainly a great place for wrestlers to be seen and to get yourself out there. In Kevin’s (Kelly) own words, they weren’t looking for announcers at that time. But, they had other projects in mind. They had Future of Honor in mind. They had Women of Honor in mind. And so, if someone presented themselves to them for one of the newer projects, they were going to give it serious consideration. For a while there, there was a guy named Matt Ryan, he and I had become sort of a team for some of those events. It was weird. My first tryout was interviewing Bobby Fish in front of our Executive Producer and Cary Silkin who, of course, owned Ring of Honor from 2004 until 2011. My second tryout was with Adam Cole. That was nerve-racking. The very next day, through necessity, I called Future of Honor 2 in Laurel, DE. And then from there, I’d get a match here and there until January 2016 when I started getting to call some of the DVD and VOD events. In February 2016, I got the news that Kevin would be leaving and there’d be an opportunity to be the lead announcer.”

On his vast array of broadcast partners in a short time in ROH:

“I’ve had so many good partners. Right out of the gate, my first partner for a full event was Steve Corino. Steve and I get along very, very well. He’s a huge Phillies fan. We still text all the time – NEVER about wrestling, always about baseball. He said, “Just relax and have a good time!” That was the best advice anybody could have given me. I ended up calling the Bullet Club send off including AJ Styles’ last appearance. I called a lot of things of that magnitude in kind of a back-up quarterback role. From there, I worked with BJ Whitmer a lot as well as Nigel McGuinness for our first 2 Women of Honor specials. Nigel, I really enjoyed calling matches with as he gave the perspective of a fighter. It is kind of like different flavors of ice cream! With Kevin (Kelly), I was able to learn some of the different production cues. But, my favorite, and I am biased, has to be Colt Cabana. (laughs).”

On his bonding experience with broadcast partner Colt Cabana:

“Colt was always somebody that I really looked up to. He was somebody who did it his own way, found his own path. Somebody who, when one door closed, he kicked open two more. Colt is somebody who has made movies, he’s got one of the most successful podcasts out there. Just someone who is genuinely funny, a genuine guy. I’m really lucky to have partnered with. The first event we did together, it was myself, Kevin, and Colt at the ROH 15th Anniversary. I hadn’t really talked much to Colt let alone called anything with him. So, we kind of felt out this weird chemistry as it was happening. About a month later, we were in Baltimore. Kevin (Kelly) couldn’t make that event. It was just Colt and myself. We were eating seafood and Colt asked me, “So, who do I have to talk to to do this full time?” (laughs) Once I got the buy in from him, I got even more confident. Colt is somebody who really made me feel at ease the way Steve (Corino) did. He’s been around wrestling almost 20 years now which is crazy because he’s only, I think, 37. He’s someone who has his finger on the pulse of pop culture. He’s someone who has a lot of insight having been in Ring of Honor for so, so long. His first match (in ROH) was in December of 2002, the year that RIng of Honor launched. He’s someone that does his research. It may look like we’re having fun out there because we are! But, before the show begins, we’re going over the matches and the history behind them.”

On his favorite memory so far in wrestling:

“I think my favorite memory would be my first time on pay per view. It was in 2016 and I called Steve Corino and BJ Whitmer’s Fight Without Honor. It was my first time live. I remember being backstage, I almost couldn’t breathe. I felt like somebody stepped on my lungs. I was just so excited. I remember Kevin getting me through it. That was probably my favorite because it was my first and I remember the feeling and the excitement. More recently, there have been so many things… AJ Styles’ send off. Adam Cole’s last match (in Ring of Honor). Somebody who is so important. Calling Bobby Fish’s last match, Bobby is a good friend.”

On the growth of ROH:

“We had the largest card ever back in April at the Supercard of Honor. Sometimes, you know, if you pay attention to what is said on the Internet, A lot are supportive, some aren’t. We’re in the midst of the highest attended year in Ring of Honor history. We’re in the midst of the biggest event in Ring of Honor history (Final Battle)…. Calling the Hardy’s against the Young Bucks in a ladder match in front of the largest crowd of Ring of Honor history with my wife and, at the time, my 6 month old son right there. That was just incredible.”

On if ROH is now the #2 Company in the World:

“Number 2 in the world is tricky. With our partners New Japan Pro Wrestling and CMLL, CMLL being the world’s oldest wrestling promotion, they’re big as well and it is such a treat to be partnered with New Japan and CMLL. With all deference to them, I think New Japan has a little more reach. CMLL does it 7 nights a week when they do tours. Those organizations may be bigger. But, I think Ring of Honor has found a great groove in the United States. I think we might be the second largest in the United States. We got there because of smart management. We have gotten there from incremental growth. We haven’t tried to rush anything. We haven’t tried to artificially grow faster. Although Cody has signed the largest deal in Ring of Honor history, it has been lucrative for us as well because of the merchandise he sells and the money he brings in. There have been others who made made giant leaps before. The idea of going head to head with WWE… There is only one organization that has gone on cable TV and stayed there for 30 years. So, they deserve all the credit in the world. But, I think Ring of Honor, we provide something that is different. I liken it to music – I’m a big music fan. I’d much rather go see Elvis Costello than Justin Timberlake. Justin Timberlake is amazing. But, Elvis Costello has a little bit more soul, a little more passion, and a little more authenticity than some of the over-produced elements that someone like Justin Timberlake would have on his show.”

On the upcoming Final Battle PPV:

“This Final Battle is going to be amazing and here is why. Over the course of the past year, a lot has been said about a lot of talent from Ring of Honor might be moving on and there were a lot of question marks about how we would replace that talent, where we would go, or what we might do. Over the course of this year, not only did RIng of Honor replace that talent but we’ve established some new stars through their hard work. This year’s Final Battle, it really is Ring of Honor’s signature event. THere is no better way to celebrate that than with some original ROH talent.” He continues, “The top of the card really says it all. We have Jay Lethal versus Marty Scurll and in the main event, Dalton Castle versus Cody. I couldn’t think of better representatives of what Ring of Honor is and where we’re going than those 4 men.”

Mick Foley On Distancing Himself From Classic Hell in a Cell Match, His Status For Raw 25th Anniversary

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley recently spoke with Brian Fritz of Sporting News, and below are some interview highlights:

On his new, annual tradition of dressing as Santa Claus:

“That has really become the new tradition,” Foley told Sporting News. “I have a couple of great charities I work with on Long Island and we try to bring some joy to children who are not always so joyful.”

On distancing himself from his classic Hell in a Cell match against The Undertaker:

“The first time I watched the infamous Hell in a Cell match in its entirety in many years is because my children wanted to see it,” Foley said. “I realized upon watching that match in its entirety that, all these years later, it really packs an emotional wallop. And for years, I kind of tried to distance myself from that match and instead, almost 20 years after the fact, I’m embracing it and looking forward to reliving it on stage at 20 North American stops in the spring of 2018.”

On his status for the WWE Raw 25th anniversary events:

“I’m sure it will be a good show with or without me,” said Foley. “I thought a year away is probably proper when you’ve been fired in public but I think 10 months is probably plenty of time. If I get the call; I don’t know what I’ll do if I get the call. I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.”

To Starrcade

A little over a year before Vince McMahon “changed the game” with WrestleMania, Jim Crockett Jr. hosted his own major promotional show and ushered in the era of the “supercard.” It was Thanksgiving, 1983 when Starrcade debuted from the sold-out Greensboro Coliseum. The venue was appropriate for the south-eastern based wrestling promotion and served as JCP’s home base the way Madison Square Garden was the primary venue for McMahon’s wrestling empire. The first four Starrcade events would take place in that arena.

The name obviously was meant to highlight to tremendous starpower that was converging onto one location. It was a catchy name too, but unfortunately had already been taken by Ted Turner. Yes, the same guy who would eventually buyout Crockett’s promotion had, a year before the first Starrcade, produced a gameshow for TBS called “Starcade.” Not wanting to get into a copyright fight over it, Crockett added an extra “r” and called it a day. One wonders what would have happened if he’d stuck with the original, traditional, spelling only to have Turner’s team of lawyers descend upon him. He might have been forced to sell five years earlier, or he might have been so offended that he would refuse ever to sell to Turner.

What made Starrcade significant was the fact that it was a closed-circuit broadcast, something else the WWF would latch onto and eventually perfect with the PPV model in years to come. Starrcade was not the first closed-circuit wrestling show; it was in fact a common practice whenever a show was sold out with overflow attendance expected. There was a difference, however, between Vince McMahon Sr. piping matches into the Felt Forum on a night Bruno was defending, and what Jim Crockett Jr. did with Starrcade. Crockett actively pushed his supercard as a closed-circuit show, taking the extra-viewing method to be a feature worth promoting instead of a necessary afterthought.

The in-arena attendance was still most important, but Crockett knew his brand was bigger than just the 16,000 people packed into the Greensboro Coliseum. He knew more people than that would want to see what he had put together so he promoted his show as bigger than what one arena could hold. It was a simple marketing trick—again, using closed-circuit was a decades-old practice—but it effectively rebranded and reimagined closed-circuit as an instrument for a booming business. It was positively McMahon-esque in its marketing.

starrcade 1983 harley race ric flair

The event was broadcast via satellite to arenas all over JCP’s territory, offering up the first real push-back to Vince McMahon’s revolutionary (in more ways than one) tactics to expand the WWF’s empire. At the time, the WWF had been aggressively moving into existing and established pro wrestling markets, scooping up top talent from neighboring promotions and airing WWF wrestling on TV across the country. As Vince put it in his famous 1991 Sports Illustrated interview…

In the old days, there were wrestling fiefdoms all over the country, each with its own little lord in charge. Each little lord respected the rights of his neighboring little lord. No takeovers or raids were allowed. There were maybe 30 of these tiny kingdoms in the U.S. and if I hadn’t bought out my dad, there would still be 30 of them, fragmented and struggling. I, of course, had no allegiance to those little lords.

Most promoters were either too financially insecure to challenge Vince’s aggression, or were too old fashioned to know how. Jim Crockett Jr. stood up to the bully as best as he could and Starrcade offered a substantial victory for the rebellion against the burgeoning empire. In fact it was the continued success of Starrcade that motivated Vince to run his own major supercard on Thanksgiving, and he used his muscle (and the tease of a Hogan vs Andre WrestleMania III rematch) to force PPV promoters in 1987 to choose his show over Crockett’s. The 1987 Starrcade was also the first to be shown on PPV in a move directly competing with McMahon, but after the first Survivor Series thumped Starrcade 5, Crockett sold his promotion to Ted Turner who moved the supershow to December where it remained the WCW event for the next decade.

Like WrestleMania would come to do, the first Starrcade was built around a major world title feud eating up the majority of the promotion, with a secondary title match topping the undercard and a few specialty matches tossed in for flavor. Ric Flair challenged Harley Race for the title, and though it was not a “fresh” feud by any means, it was was easily the biggest match Crockett could possibly book at the time.

The other major championship match was a tag title contest between the Brisco Brothers and Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood. Throughout the 1970’s and 80’s the Carolina-based promotion made its name as one that focused on tag team wrestling. Over time, they shifted to emphasizing single-stars with big personalities, but their fans still appreciated a good two-on-two fight. A big tag title match on the biggest show in the promotion’s history was the perfect co-main-event.

Down the card there was Roddy Piper and Greg Valentine locking up in a dog collar match, and Jimmy Valiant (in a mask as “Charlie Brown”) took on The Great Kabuki in a title vs mask match for the NWA television title. The rest of the card was filled with tag matches, other than a quick throwaway between Abdullah the Butcher and Carlos Colon. All in all it was just an eight-match show (at a time when most big cards featured ten-to-twelve contests), though that allowed lots of time to be given to the four heavily-promoted fights, in particular the steel cage main-event.

Everything about the show worked. The undercard entertained at a fast pace, the specialty matches offered good variety, the tag title match was hot and the main event had the crowd in a frenzy. All of it lived up to the hype…and that’s the most important part: The show worked, not because the matches themselves—how often had JCP fans seen Ric Flair and Harley Race square off? Fifty times?—it was the hype around the show that made it special.

Pro Wrestling is 75% hype anyway. You can take the best match and run it in front of a dead crowd and the match will flop, every time. On the other hand, you can take Hogan and Rock and put it in Toronto at WrestleMania and you’ll get magic. How? Hype leads to energy, energy leads to excitement, excitement leads to entertainment.

Put Starrcade’s card on a random JCP house show, run it a week earlier and don’t give it any special name or extra promotion of any kind and you’d have a really great little show that 12,000 people would see and forget about.

Crockett willed that show into success. He told everyone it would be a big deal, that it was a big deal and that it had been a big deal, so it became a big deal. As long as the actual show was good (and it was) his marketing would work. And it did. Starrcade is Starrcade because it was hyped into existence.

Which is what makes WWE’s decision not to hype their version so baffling.

WWE.com

Last month, on Thanksgiving weekend (Saturday night), the company ran a “special” house show from the Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina. It featured guest appearances by Dustin Rhodes (sans gold makeup), Arn Anderson, Ric Flair, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express and even a steel cage match featuring (a) Flair!

But unless you were there you didn’t see it.

The show was hyped locally, with leaflets, TV interviews, radio spots and more. It was talked about online. It received one or two passing references on television but for the most part it was just another house show, albeit one with a few more stars than you’d otherwise see.

Basically they did the exact opposite of what Crockett did to turn Starrcade into a brand. It’s frustrating how the WWE did not see (or chose to ignore) the potential in setting up cameras (even a single static camera for an old school look) and airing the show on the WWE Network. As much as they said they wanted to honor the legacy of the show, in reality they did it a disservice by not embracing the “everyone needs to see this” and “hype it till its real” philosophies that made the first event such a hit.

Hopefully the regional success of this year’s Starrcade will inspire WWE to make it an annual occurrence, and maybe even show it on television. Until then, we have the memory of wrestling days gone by and of a supercard that, for a brief moment, came face to face with the World Wrestling Empire and didn’t back down.

Here’s to Starrcade.

WWE has issued the following press release after yesterday’s news of WWE Studios expanding into TV and digital production:

“WWE Studios goes multiplatform

WWE announced that WWE Studios, the organization’s motion picture production arm, will expand its mandate to include scripted, non-scripted, family and animated television and digital content.

Michael Luisi, President of WWE Studios, will continue to oversee the studio and the new television and digital directive, and the Studio will be represented by global talent agency WME in these endeavors.

“Given the size of our fan base and their appetite for WWE programming well beyond our core in-ring shows Monday Night Raw and SmackDown LIVE, this is the ideal time to further establish the WWE brand with new genres across platforms,” said Vince McMahon, WWE Chairman & CEO. “WWE Studios is open for business with this new TV and digital initiative.”

“Our new expanded focus on television and digital continues to push WWE Studios as a multi-platform production company with the ability to create original content for global distribution, as we have successfully done for the big screen,” said Michael Luisi, President WWE Studios. “We look forward to identifying key partners to work alongside us while creating opportunities to use our on-screen WWE talent in new and exciting ways.”

WWE has already seen success with hit shows Total Divas and Total Bellas on E!, and has a much-anticipated Andre the Giant documentary in partnership with HBO set to premiere in 2018. WWE Studios has produced movies such as “The Call” and “The Marine” franchise, and has most recently teamed up with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Film4 to produce the feature film “Fighting with My Family,” written and directed by Stephen Merchant (The Office, Hello Ladies), which MGM will distribute worldwide.”

News on Creative Plans for Jeff Hardy’s WWE Return

As we noted yesterday, it appears as if Matt Hardy will indeed be able to use his “broken” gimmick in WWE as Anthem’s Ed Nordholm recently revealed to Sports Illustrated that the company is restructuring talent deals to allow them to use Impact gimmicks outside of the company.

We also noted that WWE is working on a new version of the “broken” character for Matt Hardy, and The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that while not confirmed, Matt is likely to be calling himself “woken” in WWE as opposed to “broken”. The report furthers that when Jeff Hardy returns from injury, which will likely be around WrestleMania time, he too will be using the “woken” gimmick along with his brother Matt.

Big Update On Lio Rush’s Current WWE Status

As we noted earlier today, WWE NXT talent Lio Rush has removed all references to WWE on his social media accounts, which has lead to speculation that he might have been released from WWE.

PWInsider.com is now reporting that despite Rush’s actions on social media, he has not been released by WWE and is still with NXT.

Backstage Update on Plans for Brock Lesnar at WWE Royal Rumble

As noted, WWE has apparently scrapped the planned main event for the Royal Rumble PPV, however there has been conflicting information surrounding the match plans.

One report suggested Brock Lesnar defending his Universal Title against Finn Balor was the originally planned Royal Rumble match, however that idea was scrapped following Survivor Series and Lesnar’s plans remain up in the air.

Another report suggested Balor was never in the mix to face Lesnar at Royal Rumble, as Vince McMahon perceives Balor to be bland when he’s not playing the Demon character.

In an update on Brock Lesnar’s Royal Rumble plans, The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting WWE might have Lesnar wrestle some type of non-title match at the PPV.

The reason for the non-title match is because there are few top stars Lesnar can work with at Royal Rumble, as Vince does not want Lesnar vs Strowman, and the plans if for Lesnar vs Roman Reigns to take place at WrestleMania. With Samoa Joe beginning a feud with Roman Reigns on Raw this past Monday night, it appears he, along with Strowman, Balor and Reigns, are out of the running as possible Lesnar opponents at Royal Rumble.

As we noted earlier this week, Lesnar will be making his return to WWE TV at Raw on December 18th.

Lio Rush Released?

Well, it’s been a good while since Lio Rush made the infamous Tweet poking fun at the release of Emma following her loss to Asuka. This is not news I like reporting and do hope it’s not the truth.

I personally did not like the fact this Tweet ever happened but it was just is misguided Tweet which I am sure was meant to be light hearted but just completely at the wrong time.

Since then Lio has not been seen on live events for NXT, the most recent Takeover or it would seem at the most recent tapings held this past week. That length of time would have been a fairly realistic suspension that could have been used to address the issue and move on. Lets hope this is just the Rasslin Rumour mill as Mr Rush is a phenomenal talent and a great addition to the roster.

Results

AIW Hell on Earth 13 (November 24)

  1. Matthew Justice over Shawn Shultz
  2. Magnum CK over PB Smooth
  3. Dominic Garrini over “All Ego” Ethan Page
  4. No Consequences (AJ Gray, Garrison King, Joshua Bishop, Malcolm Monroe III, & Tre Lamar) over “Supercop” Dick Justice, the Philly-Marino Experience (Marino Tenaglia & Philly Collins), & Weird World (Alex “Worldwide” Kellar & Evan “Weird Body” Adams)
  5. Louis Lyndon over Gringo Loco
  6. Tom Lawlor over “Hot Sauce” Tracy Williams
  7. Jimmy Jacobs over Colt Cabana
  8. To Infinity and Beyond (Cheech & Colin Delaney) (c) over Boys From Jollyville (Russ Myers & T-Money) and Young Studs (Bobby Beverly & Eric Ryan) to retain the AIW Tag Team Championship
  9. Laredo Kid over DJ Z, Jody Fleisch, and Matt Cross
  10. Nick Gage over Tim Donst (c) to win the AIW Absolute Championship (Fans Bring the Weapons Match)

The King is back, baby… and he’s champion! In bloody battle Nick Gage claimed the Absolute Championship from Tim Donst, and AIW may never be the same again. But that wasn’t the only blood on the card, unfortunately, as Jody Fleisch’s triumphant return to the United States was cut sadly short when he landed poorly on a dive and gashed his leg open, necessitating that he pull out of the rest of the weekend.

Check it out when it hits Smart Mark Video, folks.

NOVA Pro 11th Dimension (November 24)

  1. Mack Buckler (c) over Graham Bell to retain the CRAB Wrestling Championship
  2. Carnies (Beau Crockett, Kerry Awful, Nick Iggy, & Tripp Cassidy) over Sugar Dunklings (Lance Lude, Lucas Calhoun, Rob Killjoy, & Sugar Dunkerton) (Elimination Match)
  3. John Kermon over Wheeler YUTA
  4. Gunner Miller over Cabana Man Dan (Survivor Triathlon Match Round 1)
  5. Spitifires (Ace Perry & Sage Philips) over the 1% (Bobby Shields & Logan Easton LaRoux) (Survivor Triathlon Match Round 2)
  6. Spitfires (Ace Perry, Cabana Man Dan, & Sage Philips) over the 1% (Bobby Shields, Gunner Miller, & Logan Easton LaRoux) (Survivor Triathlon Match Round 3)
  7. Isaiah Frazier over Dirty Money
  8. Jonathan Gresham over Fred Yehi
  9. Allie Kat, Deonna Purrazzo, Laynie Luck, Sahara Se7en, & Veda Scott over Brittany Blake, Faye Jackson, Jordynne Grace, LuFisto, & Mia Yim (Elimination Match)

As always, my man Duke (follow him on Twitter!) has an excellent write-up of the show, so I’ll let him take it away without too much more blabbing out of me here. But man, Yehi/Gresham sounds great, and what a starmaking turn for Allie Kat in the main. She deserves it!

Check it out when it hits Smart Mark Video, folks.

AAW Unstoppable 2017 (November 25)

  1. OI4K (Dave & Jake Crist) over Stephen Wolf & Trey Miguel

  6. ACH over Sammy Guevara
  7. Zema Ion over Penta el Zero M (c) to win the AAW Heritage Championship
  8. Rey Fenix (c) over Jimmy Jacobs to retain the AAW Heavyweight Championship

A mixed night for the Lucha Brothers in Chicago, but a great night for wrestling, it seems! Don’t let that loss for WRSTLING fool you, though, because David Starr insists the shoulder was up, and would he lie to you?

Check it out when it hits Smart Mark Video and Highspots, folks.

Powerbomb.tv Wazzup (November 25)

  1. Wheeler YUTA over Dominic Garrini
  2. Logan Easton LaRoux over AJ Gray, Anthony Greene, & Razerhawk
  3. Allie Kat over Laynie Luck
  4. Tom Lawlor over Maxwell Jacob Friedman
  5. Thick Boys (Jay Freddie & John Silver) over Ugly Ducklings (Lance Lude & Rob Killjoy)
  6. Jonathan Gresham (c) over Nick Gage by countout to retain the Powerbomb.tv Independent Wrestling Championship

Powerbomb.tv returned to our screens with Wazzup and while it was a bummer to see Jody Fleisch have to bow out due to injury, Nick Gage was an excellent replacement. He and Gresham tore the house down in the main event and took Jon’s reign to two-for-two on really clever countout finishes. YUTA/Garrini and Lawlor/MJF also stand out, but really the card as a whole was a lot of fun and at less than two hours goes down easy.

Also be sure to check out This Very Second, Bryce Remsburg’s late night show that premiered after the Wazzup card, because it was absurd as hell, with fans cutting promos and an acoustic duo rewriting Weezer and Smashing Pumpkins tunes to be about mayonnaise and hanging out with your grandma (“Despite my own age I enjoy playing old lady games”) and Orange Cassidy at his best as a surreal sideman.

Check it out on Powerbomb.tv, folks.

Beyond / WWR Pro Tournament For Tomorrow ♀ (November 26)

—WWR Tournament For Tomorrow ♀—

  1. Sonya Strong over Veda Scott
  2. Jordynne Grace over Skylar (Tournament For Tomorrow ♀ First Round Match)
  3. Tasha Steelz over Terra Calaway (Tournament For Tomorrow ♀ First Round Match)
  4. Karen Q over Willow Nightingale (Tournament For Tomorrow ♀ First Round Match)
  5. Davienne over Vanity (Tournament For Tomorrow ♀ First Round Match)
  6. Jenny Rose over Alexxis
  7. Jordynne Grace over Tasha Steelz (Tournament For Tomorrow ♀ Semifinal Match)
  8. Davienne over Karen Q (Tournament For Tomorrow ♀ Semifinal Match)
  9. Solo Darling & Team Sea Stars (Ashley Vox & Delmi Exo) over Allie Kat, Laynie Luck, & Nadi
  10. Deonna Purrazzo over Madison Rayne
  11. Jordynne Grace over Davienne (Tournament For Tomorrow ♀ Finals)

For results in detail, you can check our post here, but Jordynne Grace is your Tournament For Tomorrow ♀ winner, overcoming Davienne’s damned numbers game (courtesy of Sammi Lane and Miranda Vionette), countering every bit of underhanded shortcut-taking with resilience and strength to prevail. And, on the Powerbomb Pre-Game (still free on YouTube, which is embedded in that linked post) after a bloody war with Nick Gage, David Starr made it official– he and Joey Janela will do battle to determine the true ace of Beyond on 12/31… and the fans will bring the weapons!

Check it out on Powerbomb.tv, folks.

Progress Chapter 58: Live Your Best Life (November 26)

  1. Travis Banks (c) over Matt Riddle to retain the Progress World Championship
  2. Jimmy Havoc & Mark Haskins over Connor Mills & Maverick Mayhew
  3. Eddie Dennis over Jack Sexsmith
  4. Jinny over Dahlia Black to become #1 contender to the Progress Women’s Championship (No Disqualification Match)
  5. Timothy Thatcher over Strangler Davis
  6. Timothy Thatcher over Chris Ridgeway
  7. Joseph Conners over “Flash” Morgan Webster
  8. Toni Storm (c) over Alex Windsor to retain the Progress Women’s Championship
  9. Grizzled Young Veterans (James Drake & Zack Gibson) over #CCK (Chris Brookes & Kid Lykos) to win the Progress Tag Team Championship

As always with a show I recap I’ll keep it short and sweet here, but… ROB LYNCH IS BACK, BABY! Indeed, that’s why Thatcher worked double duty, because Big Rob returned from his injury-inflicted hiatus to cost Davis his match and the Atlas Division Championship match that he put on the line in it. Tim wanted to have a proper match, and so Chris Ridgeway made his Progress debut!

Bad news for poor Kid Lykos, however, as he injured his shoulder and actually had to be stretchered off mid-match. Get well soon, wolf boy!

Check it out when it hits Demand Progress, folks.

As always…

Remember folks, no matter what type of wrestling you like, no matter how down you feel about the state of WWE, Impact, ROH, or any other “big-time” pro wrestling, there’s something out there for you. There’s a pro wrestling product that can hit you in the right spot and make you love wrestling like you thought you’d never be able to love it again. It’s there, I promise. You just gotta reach out and find it, and that, my friends, is what the Sermon on the Mat is all about.

Impact Wrestling preview (Nov. 30, 2017): Vacant reigns supreme

Impact Wrestling returns tonight (Nov. 30) with their forth episode from the most recent set of tapings.

Here’s what’s advertised for tonight:

  • Johnny Impact vs. Alberto El Patron
  • The Knockout’s championship tournament begins
  • James Storm vs. Texano
  • Matt Sydal vs. Dyson Dux
  • LAX speaks
  • Hakim Zayn vs. Ishimori

As per usual, here are our five questions about Impact tonight:

1) Who is going to the finals of the Knockouts championship tournament?

Tonight is the first of two triple threat matches, where the winners will go and fight one on one to crown a new Knockout’s champion. They haven’t specified who’s in which match. But it’ll still be fun to guess who’s going to the finals.

The six participants are Madison Rayne, KC Spinelli, Laurel Van Ness, Rosemary, Sienna, and Allie.

While upsets are always possible, I think it’s safe to take Spinelli and Madison off the list. This is KC’s first time actually in the Impact Zone (she was part of a couple matches that aired from Border City Wrestling) and Madison is likely just helping fill out the numbers.

Laurel Van Ness has done great character work while at Impact and I wouldn’t be super shocked if she advanced, but I’m still thinking that the most likely group is two of either Sienna, Rosemary, and Allie.

I’m going to guess Allie and Rosemary. Sienna being left out would be a bit surprising, but it’d freshen things up not to see Rosemary vs. Sienna again. Sienna vs. Allie could work but they really shouldn’t leave Rosemary out of the finals.

2) Can the Alberto/Johnny Impact issues be contained in a standard match?

Tonight’s match between Alberto El Patron and Johnny Impact is being billed as a grudge match. But it’s also just a regular ol’ one on one match. No stipulations. Nothing goes to the winner but pride.

Last time we saw these two, they were fighting all over the backstage area into the arena. It was heated and personal. It certainly didn’t feel like something that’s going to be resolved in a match that doesn’t involve weapons.

Perhaps this never gets off the ground because they attack each other too early and the referee can’t control it. Perhaps they resort to weapons during the match resulting in a DQ. And then there’s always Champion Eli Drake, who likely knows he’ll have to contend with one of these guys at one point, if not both. He may decide to use this opportunity to get the drop on them.

3) Are LAX going to issue a challenge for the tag team titles?

We’re set to hear from the Latin American Exchange tonight. And most likely, they’re going to make their intentions to reclaim the tag team championships known.

They lost the titles prior to Bound for Glory and Sami Callihan helped oVe retain them at the PPV. But last week, LAX won a 3 on 3 match against oVe & Callihan. Surely, that’s enough for them to at least lay claim to a tag team championship match.

Whether they may have other business remains to be seen. For awhile, LAX was trying to get their fingers in every pie. But currently, they only have a tag team and don’t have someone else to compete in the X Division, the heavyweight division, or the Knockouts division (my understand is Diamante was hurt this round of tapings.) But they can always try to recruit someone new.

4) Are James Storm and Texano fighting for cowboy supremacy?

They damn well better be! Both dudes wear cowboy hats and Texano even carries around a bull rope. If they’re not going to put a cowboy hat on a pole, they should at least make this for Cowboy pride.

James Storm always has some issues with American Top Team, which is Bobby Lashley’s MMA group. He better watch his back or they may prevent him from earning the title of Supreme Cowboy.

5) Is Chris Adonis and Eli Drake on the same page after the turkey suit fiasco?

Last week, Eli Drake didn’t only have to watch his friend get forced into wearing that embarrassing turkey suit, but then Adonis accidentally hit Drake in the face with a pie.

Is the champ a forgiving guy or is he going to be miffed with Adonis after the wackiness rom last week?

Impact Wrestling airs tonight at 8 EST on Pop TV. Who’s watching?

X-Pac Praises Aleister Black and Velveteen Dream

X-Pac was the guest on the Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast this week and during the interview, he had high praise for Aleister Black and the Velveteen Dream from NXT Takeover: War Games.

I was really high on the Aleister Black and Velveteen Dream match. Black has really upped his game since he has been there, from his first match to now it’s amazing. When he got to the end of the match and did his comeback, the way it flowed that wasn’t one of the stronger parts of his game when he first got there.”

WWE NXT recap, reactions, video highlights (Nov. 29, 2017): The Alamo’s basement

For a more detailed recap, check our live results post here.

Street Profits def. Tino Sabatelli and Riddick Moss via pinfall following the pop-up Spinebuster/Frog Splash combo to Sabatelli. Videos and interviews are shown setting up the episode’s UK division tag team main event.

Remember how last week’s show was filmed before TakeOver but still managed to feel fairly important? This one didn’t work out that way.

Maybe it was the change of venue, or that this was a second straight week of televised house show matches. Could be that Nov. 21 was anchored by a borderline great match between two guys we haven’t seen face each other with, even though the outcome was never in much doubt, a belt on the line. Probably it’s just me.

– Whatever the reason, this longer rematch of something we just saw a few weeks ago that resulted in the same team going over set the tone. I enjoy the Profits quite a bit, and the amount of time they’ve been given to set up what ended up being a one-sided feud probably means there are folks backstage who like them, too. But Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins didn’t really show us anything we haven’t seen from them before.

Same situation with Sabatelli and Moss. They appear to be well-suited as mid-card heels, and they work better as a team than as singles competitors. But aside from the strangely charming wrinkle we got from the pre-match videos that Riddick thinks he owns half of all Tino’s stuff, there’s not much which would cause anyone to champion their moving up the card.

– Appreciate the effort which went into tying Moustache Mountain vs. Pete Dunne and Mark Andrews into past events on NXT and giving it some stakes for the future of the UK title scene. Really, I do. But that didn’t stop the clips they debuted on YouTube last week or on this episode from feeling like guys trying to cut promos and interviews for a match they already had. Because that’s what they were.

Kairi Sane def. Peyton Royce via pinfall following the InSane Elbow. Announcements are made for next week, where Ruby Riott and Sonya Deville will settle their differences in a No DQ match, and new NXT champ Andrade “Cien” Almas and Zelina Vega will celebrate the start of the El Ídolo era. Drew McIntyre’s injury is confirmed.

First off, the “I ♥ Billie” and “I ♥ Peyton” shirts worn by The Iconic Duo are magic and should be cherished. Also, WHY IS THERE NO ICONIC DUO MERCH ON WWE SHOP DOT COM!

Ahem, sorry.

Here’s another okay match that feels like other okay matches we’ve seen before. Mauro Ranallo and Percy Watson (Nigel McGuinness wasn’t on this broadcast, although Mauro said he’ll be back next week) paid some lip service to it being a battle that could determine Ember Moon’s first challenger for the Women’s title, but it felt to me more like a leftover from the backstage vignette which gave us Billie Kay vs. Sane a few weeks back.

If it were to work as something with big ramifications for the championship picture, it should have been longer than the five-ish minutes we got. Not that I’d really want more of this. It was “greatest hits” match of all the bits you’d expected… Kay distraction leads to spinning heel kick for Pey, Royce in control with slow stuff, Sane comes back with spears and strikes, nearfall which caused the Aussie to throw a tantrum, final comeback and elbow to end it.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, if you’re at a house show.

The Mae Young Classic winner has also seemed… off… since winning the tournament. Not that she’s suddenly bad – more like we’re watching her adapt to regular work in a WWE ring. Could also be that last year’s NXT Breakout Act doesn’t have great chemistry with Kairi, too. It happens.

On to the next thing. Which apparently involves more from two ladies who’ve been promoted and are heels on separate main roster shows. That should be interesting.

Trent Seven and Tyler Bate def. Pete Dunne and Mark Andrews via pinfall when Bate covers UK champ Dunne following Tyler Driver ‘97. After the match, The Bruiserweight takes out his tag partner, hitting Bitter End on Andrews.

These guys are really good wrestlers. They made this 10 – 12 minute affair a blast to watch, which at the same time made me kind of sad they’re not getting regular exposure to develop deeper stories on WWE Network.

Getting a double-dose of Dunne these past couple weeks has been a real treat. He’s getting the full NXT fan treatment: busting his ass to play a heel and being cheered regardless. He and Andrews really stood out, both for committing to the reluctant tag partner schtick – blind tagging and glaring at one another throughout – and displaying some exciting tandem maneuvers. The Bruiserweight’s backstabber to Seven as he was countering a monkey flip from the Welshman was great. That paled in comparison to the spot where Andrews delivered Bate to Dunne for a sit-out powerbomb via frankensteiner, though.

Trent is a fun character, but especially with the way he’s been presented from the UK Championship Tournament on, Bate is the real star of WWE’s version of Moustache Mountain. Every time he and Dunne go toe-to-toe feels special, and the big hope coming out of this is that Tyler getting the pin on the champ leads to round three between these two “Fight Forever”-worthy rivals down the line.

All involved made this a match worth seeking out, and they should be getting a regular chance to do more.

Most of this can be safely skipped. The real post-WarGames stuff starts next week.

Rumor Roundup (Nov. 30, 2017): Broken Hardy, Impact policy change, Lesnar plans, Royal Rumble, more!

Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.

Important reminder: Rumors are just that — rumors. None of this has been confirmed as legitimate news or fact, it’s just circulating around the pro wrestling rumor mill. Remember, take it all with a grain of salt.

Rumors for the Day:

  • Matt Hardy may soon own the “Broken” trademark, but SI.com says WWE will not call their version of his character that even though it will be very similar to his TNA act.
  • PWInsider reports Ed Nordholm’s comments about Matt using his gimmick on Raw are part of a new Impact policy of giving all talent ownership of their characters, mannerisms, moves and catchphrases.
  • Brock Lesnar may not be defending the Universal title at Royal Rumble, according to Wrestling Observer Radio, because WWE doesn’t believe they have a suitable opponent for him.
  • Lesnar was announced by the venue as appearing on the Dec. 19 Raw in Providence, RI, but that might just be for a dark match to help sell tickets before Christmas.
  • There’s talk the Singh Brothers could be done with WWE, but they may just be transitioning away from Jinder Mahal.

If you have heard of any interesting rumors that you’d like to add, feel free to post them in the comments section below. Just remember they are rumors and not confirmed as fact, so please take them as such. Have fun with it.

Infamous Cartel Reportedly Demanding Huge Ransom From Conor McGregor After Bar Fight

Credit: Wikimedia Commons

For what it’s worth, The Irish Sun, which is commonly regarded as a tabloid in Ireland, is reporting the infamous Kinahan cartel is demanding a huge ransom from UFC megastar Conor McGregor, after McGregor allegedly punched the father of a cartel member while intoxicated at a Dublin pub.

The report notes McGregor was at a pun on Sunday night, got involved in a bar fight, and when he intended to strike one of the men involved in the punch-up, he ended up accidentally hitting the father of a volatile drug dealer with an extremely violent past.

A source noted the following to The Sun: “The man responsible is right to lay low. There’s already talk that they want €900,000 [which amounts to over $1 million] from him as compensation. They know he has the money at hand.”

The Sun report furthers there has been no ‘hit’ put out on McGregor, and as of now there is no official threat the UFC star’s life.

NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia match card & rumors (SPOILERS)

NXT spent this evening (Nov. 29) taping television leading into its next WWE Network special, Takeover: Philadelphia, which is scheduled for the night before Royal Rumble – Sat., Jan. 27, 2018, at Wells Fargo Center. The episodes filmed at Full Sail Live should take us into early January (they’re taping again on Jan. 4 in Atlanta), and the picture for the next live event already started to take shape.

One title bout was booked, and the direction for a few other matches seemed clear… even if we’re not yet quite sure how some of these rivalries will be presented in Philly.

Here’s the one we know for sure, based on spoilers (get them in full here):

– Johnny Gargano vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas (c) for the NXT championship

Johnny Wrestling won a Fatal 4Way #1 contender match over Aleister Black (more on him in a minute), Lars Sullivan and Killian Dain. Gargano’s road back has already featured two losses to the new champ, and Zelina Vega’s been very willing to invoke Johnny’s old partner to get into his head. When is Tommaso Ciampa due back again (it’s supposed to be March, but…)?

Then there are several folks who seem to be on a collision course. A lot can change with another set of episodes yet to film, but…

– Aleister Black vs. Adam Cole

Gargano’s win came after Black had Lars Sullivan down. Interference an Undisputed ERA attack kept him from earning a title shot. The Stoic Satanist will probably want to address that with Undisputed’s leader, since the other two members of the team will probably have a title defense.

– Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly (c) vs. SAnitY for the NXT tag titles

This could get burned off at Center Stage in January, but Eric Young and company will have a rematch coming to them after Undisputed took their belts in Florida.

– Nikki Cross vs. Peyton Royce (or Billie Kay)

The Bannockburn Banshee saved Ember Moon from a beating by The Iconic Duo. Since not everyone can be in a title match, this has the feel of dark match in Philly, but we’ll see.

– Ember Moon (c) vs. Kairi Sane and/or Shayna Baszler for the Women’s title

Moon dealt with someone who won’t still be around come TakeOver in a title match tonight (Raw’s Sonya Deville). When the Mae Young Classic winner appeared for a staredown, the runner-up made her NXT debut to choke The Pirate Princess out. If Baszler is headed to a WrestleMania feud, this could be a way to quickly showcase her on the black-and-yellow brand without having her taking a pin.

Most of that is just one person’s interpretation of a list of results, so feel free to tell me where you think I’m guessing wrong below, Cagesiders.

At least we can all agree this has to change – there is a noticeable lack of Velveteen Dream.

Alberto El Patron has nothing but nice things to say about Paige’s return to Raw

After a tumultuous year, everything has been quiet with Alberto El Patron and Paige off-screen. Even the reveal that they’re no longer a couple happened quietly, via the Raw Superstar’s Snapchat.

It shouldn’t be noteworthy that Impact Wrestling’s El Patron had nice, professional things to say about Paige’s return to WWE television. But their relationship was such a constant source of chaos and headlines, it’s kind of shocking how peacefully they’ve gone their separate ways.

Whether we’re right to be surprised or not, we were kind of caught off guard by Alberto’s pleasant comments about his ex on a conference call today:

“It’s fantastic, it was just about time. I used to say this all the time, people forget that she had neck surgery, screws behind her neck. That’s the reason why she was out of the business and it takes time to recover from something like that and then she started working really hard for her big comeback, and now she’s there.

She’s doing what she has been doing since the beginning of her career in WWE. She’s killing it, she’s doing a fantastic job. I said it before and I’ll say it again, she has all the potential to be the most successful Diva of all time. We have to give her time.”

He didn’t even make any cracks about Triple H’s nose!

El Patron did comment on how his life has changed since the incident with Paige at Orlando International Airport which led to his being suspended by Impact and stripped of their World title. And while her name doesn’t come up, but the timeframe does line-up such that it’s hard to not take this as a comment on their relationship:

“Personally, I’m back to where my life was before with zero drama, zero nothing. I’ve been saying this from the beginning, just look at my life before this past year, it was how it is right now, just about work and family.

A family man, working all the time, no drama, no nothing. And now I’m back to where I was, and I’m gonna continue to do it. Working hard and making my family happy, and making the wrestling fans and my company Impact Wrestling happy until I decide to quit or leave the business one day.”

At least we’re not the only ones who noticed the difference.

Top Mae Young Classic Star Debuts at NXT TV Tapings *SPOILERS*

WWE taped several episodes of NXT television tonight at Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida. As we’ve already reported, a major segment took place involving one of the brand’s top championships, and we now have complete spoiler-filled results from the tapings up on the website if you’re interested.

Shayna Baszler, who had a stellar showing in the inaugural Mae Young Classic earlier this year, has officially arrived in NXT. The former MMA pioneer and “Four Horsewoman” member made her debut by attacking Kairi Sane, the women that beat her in the finals of the tournament, choking out the pirate princess on the entrance ramp.

WWE will tape another series of episodes before the January NXT Takeover: Philadelphia event which should give us a better look at the card. Right now it looks like Baszler and Sane may face off in a rematch from the Mae Young Classic finals, although it’s possible either could face Ember Moon for the NXT Women’s Championship.

Complete 11/29 WWE NXT Television Taping Results *SPOILERS*

WWE taped several episodes of NXT television tonight at Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida. Below are complete spoiler-filled results that should take the promotion through the end of 2017. It’s important to note that some of the matches might have been taped out of order, and it wasn’t clear where some of the episodes ended and began.

Dark Match: Wolfgang def. Kona Reeves

– A series of qualifying matches are announced, with the winners facing off in a four-way match to determine the number one contender to the NXT Championship.

– Adrade Cien Almas and Zelina Vega came out to celebrate their win at NXT Takeover: WarGames. They demanded that everyone rise and appreciate them, before mocking Drew McIntyre for getting injured in their title bout. He gloated that McIntyre would be out for a very long time, and spoke a little Spanish just to annoy the live crowd.

#1 Contender Qualifier
Killian Dain def. Trent Seven to advance in the championship chase. Good fight between the UK boys but Dain’s size was too much, as he got the win with a running senton and a huge splash from the second rope.

No Disqualification Match
Sonya Deville def. Ruby Riott. Lots of submissions back and forth. Interesting that they’d still have these ladies on NXT after they’ve already debuted on WWE television. Sonya got something of an “upset” win putting Ruby in a triangle choke over the top rope.

#1 Contender Qualifier
Johnny Gargano def. Kassius Ohno to advance in the championship chase. This was said to be the match of the night by many in attendance, and an absolute must-see, physical battle. Tons of nearfalls as they built up Gargano for the big babyface comeback, into the Gargano Escape to get the submission.

A big, very important thing happened at the Nov. 29 NXT taping (SPOILER)

At the Nov. 29 NXT taping at Full Sail Live, a big, very important thing happened.

WWE is running the story themselves, with requisite spoiler warnings, but it’s the pretty much the first thing I thought of when I saw their headline, so in an effort to minimize complaints about “ruining” things for people who avoid results in advance… you get the cryptic teaser headline.

Anyway, get out now if you don’t want to know about…

The new tag champs, Undisputed ERA’s Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Wrestling Observer’s NXT/Florida correspondent pretty much tells you what we know. Adam Cole and Nikki Cross both played a role in the title fight between the former reDRagon duo and SAnitY’s Eric Young and Killian Dain. But Cole did it better, we presume, because his boys took down the champions and Undisputed has its first WWE gold.

Since TakeOvers hit the road, Full Sail doesn’t see belts change hands very often, so this is a nice treat for the faithful before NXT heads to Atlanta for the next batch of episodes.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Now brace yourself for SAnitY call-up rumors around Rumble time…

AJ Styles isn’t retiring next Spring, there isn’t a new WWE United States title

Don’t believe everything you read on the internet, kids!

Exhibit A: AJ Styles is not retiring after WrestleMania 34

This one is pretty straight-forward. While the 40 year old WWE champ has understandably talked about how the clock is ticking on his in-ring career, rumors started by this tweet…

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Were shut down with one-word from The Phenomenal One…

Exhibit B: WWE did not unveil a new United States title design in a house show ad

This since deleted tweet from the venue for a January SmackDown live event in South Carolina caused quite a stir among belt fans…

Unfortunately, that fan-created design has been floating around for at least a couple years, and this seems to be a case of an overzealous, non-graps fan in the Florence Civic Center sales office making a quick ad to run over Thanksgiving weekend before WWE sent them an image, Photoshopped together with whatever Google search results looked coolest…

Major Segment Takes Place at Tonight’s NXT Television Tapings *SPOILERS*

WWE taped several weeks of NXT television this Wednesday at Full Sail University in Orlando, and we’ve got some major updates headed your way. Warning: the following post contains huge spoilers for a future episode of NXT set to air this December.

Still with us? Last warning!

Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly of The Undisputed Era defeated Killian Dain and Eric Young of Sanity to become the new NXT Tag Team Champions, in a match set to air on December 20th! This marks the first set of titles for Fish and O’Reilly, who were collectively known as ReDRagon on the independent scene. The duo are also three-time ROH World Tag Team Champions and two-time IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions.

No news yet on whether or not The Undisputed Era plans to invoke the “Freebird Rule” during their reign, which would allow Adam Cole to also defend the titles at any time. The rules was in effect for Sanity’s run with the gold, and of course was popularized in the modern era by The New Day.

WWE Studios is getting into the TV and digital content business

In a story first announced by Deadline, WWE Studios is set to broaden its scope beyond motion pictures and will begin producing “scripted, non-scripted, family and animated television and digital content”.

Even aside from their wrestling/sports entertainment staples like Raw and SmackDown, the Stamford-based company already does some of this with shows like Total Divas, programs for their streaming WWE Network and numerous online ventures. It’s not clear if any new shows which result from this initiative will end up on the Network, but you’d have to think that would be a possibility.

Coverage of the announcement at PWInsider mentions two shows that are already in the pipeline, The Miz and Maryse reality show The It Couple and a Tough Enough/Diva Search-type competition where women would travel together by bus, taking part in various challenges while trying to earn a WWE contract.

The press release, which follows, also mentions other WWE Studios projects:

WWE Studios goes multiplatform

WWE Studios has produced movies such as “The Call” and “The Marine” franchise, and has most recently teamed up with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Film4 to produce the feature film “Fighting with My Family,” written and directed by Stephen Merchant (The Office, Hello Ladies), which MGM will distribute worldwide.

This seems to be a little more in line with WWE’s core business, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out for WWE Studios after 15 years in the movie game.

Drew McIntyre Ruled Out of NXT Takeover: Philadelphia, Future of the NXT Title Revealed *SPOILERS*

As you likely already know, Drew McIntyre suffered a serious injury seconds before dropping the NXT Championship to Andrade Cien Almas at this month’s NXT Takeover: WarGames special.

PWInsider.com then reported that the former Smackdown “chosen one” will most likely be out of action until at least April 2018. And while he could potential return for the NXT Takeover: New Orleans special before WrestleMania, nothing is for certain that this point.

At tonight’s NXT television taping at Full Sail University, it was officially confirmed that McIntyre will not be able to invoke his contractual rematch clause at NXT Takeover: Philadelphia. Instead, a series of four singles matches will take place tonight, with the winners all advancing to a four-way #1 contender’s match. The winner of that will go on to Takeover to face Andrade Almas for the title on January 27th.

Indie Promotion Uploading Content to Global Wrestling Network, Joey Janela Shoots on Death of FloSlam

Joey Janela Shoots on FloSlam Death

In the wake of streaming service FloSlam closing its doors after several months of controversy, indie wrestler star Joey Janela took to Twitter to put yet another nail in their proverbial coffin.

“In May, Floslam tried to get me to get rid of @GCWrestling_ ‘as the middle man’ & work me into bi monthly spring break esc shows for no money, because they thought I was an idiot… They would say ‘think about all the money you can be making’ good riddance ya tool bags”.”

Janela has been wrestling for well over a decade winning titles for promotions like CZW, House of Glory, AIW and Pro Wrestling Syndicate. His WrestleMania 33 week event “Joey Janela’s Spring Break” was broadcast live on FloSlam and garnered major attention in the indie world earlier this year.

Indie Promotion Joins GWN App

Las Vegas based independent promotion Future Stars of Wrestling confirmed on Twitter today that they will begin uploading past content to the Global Wrestling Network (or GWN app).

They are teasing names like “Broken” Matt Hardy, current Global Champion Eli Drake, John Morrison, Brian Cage, Chris Masters and more. Their “When Stars Collide” event at the Sam’s Town Casino back in March featured all those names plus Sami Callihan, AR Fox, Shane Strickland, NJPW star Davey Boy Smith Jr., and Taya Valkayrie.

WWE SmackDown Live ratings (Nov. 28, 2017): Audience nearly reaches Raw’s

Falling on Giving Tuesday is probably better than being on Cyber Monday, but not main eventing with Kane and Jason Jordan might help, too.

I’m just a blogger… what do I know?

Whatever the reason, SmackDown continued to slowly but steadily grow its audience on Nov. 28. 2,680,000 people tuned in to USA Network for Randy Orton vs. Kevin Owens (among other things). That’s just 18K more than last week, but it’s also only 79K less than Raw did on the 27th.

WWE had the sixth most viewers of any of the night’s original cable programming. History’s Curse of Oak Island, Fixer Upper on HGTV, Rachel Maddow on MSNBC and Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson on Fox News. Full spoilers from NXT’s Nov. 29, 2017 tapings at Full Sail

NXT is back at their home base of Full Sail Live, where they’ll tape matches and segments for their regular Wednesday night series on WWE Network.

Tonight’s show (Nov. 29) begins the build out from TakeOver: WarGames, and the road to January’s live special in Philadelphia on the eve of Royal Rumble. It’s also the last Full Sail taping in a while, since they’ll be shooting at Center Stage in Atlanta early next year.

This will be our first hints at how NXT will look with new champions Andrade “Cien” Almas and Ember Moon, as well as the fallout from Drew McIntyre’s injury and Undisputed ERA’s biggest win since joining WWE.

We’ll know more when results start rolling in from Winter Park, Florida. We’ll be updating those here live, starting at the scheduled 6:30PM Eastern bell time:

WWE Reportedly Creating New “Broken” Character For Matt Hardy, Why Impact Will Allow It

As we have seen on WWE TV in recent weeks, Matt Hardy has been teasing the debut of the “Broken” Matt Hardy character, and the teases ramped up this week when he had a “Breakdown” after his Raw loss to Bray Wyatt.

As we have been noting, Matt Hardy has not been using the word “broken” in reference to his character’s “condition”, but rather he has been using the word “woken”.

According to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated’s Extra Mustard, WWE is indeed creating a retooled version of the “broken” character for Hardy to use in WWE. He will not actually be referred to as “broken”, however.

It appears as if Matt Hardy will indeed be able to use the version of the character with no contention from Anthem Sports and Entertainment, as Anthem’s Ed Nordholm issued the following statement to SI regarding Hardy’s use of the gimmick in WWE:

“We have seen the character development and will be interested to see where they take the concept. Our new talent agreements all incorporate language that allow talent to continue to use their IMPACT persona after they leave the company. We are working with our legal team to amend our existing agreements to extend this to all of our current and former talent.”

This week’s WWE Smackdown ranked #6 in overall viewership on cable TV for the night.

This week’s show also featured the new NXT call up group “The Riott Squad”, in addition to a Mojo Rawley heel turn which ended The Hype Bros tag team.

Anthem Executive Releases Statement on Matt Hardy’s “Breakdown”

Matt Hardy‘s “breakdown” on Raw this week seemed to indicate that a version of his “Broken Matt” persona is on the way and Impact Wrestling exec Ed Nordholm has released a statement about it.

Nordholm told Sports Illustrated, “We have seen the character development and will be interested to see where they take the concept.”

Ed continued, “Our new talent agreements all incorporate language that allow talent to continue to use their IMPACT persona after they leave the company. We are working with our legal team to amend our existing agreements to extend this to all of our current and former talent.”

Despite the public trademark battle with Matt this year, it seems like they’ve changed their stance.

SI also claims that the recent tease for a Broken Matt-like character isn’t false hope. The publication reports that WWE is creating a character that will not be labeled as Broken, but similar.

Anthem waves the white flag on ‘Broken’ battle with Matt Hardy

Well, this explains some things.

According to PWInsider, Anthem Entertainment – owners of Impact Wrestling – have decided they will not pursue ownership of the “Broken” gimmick. After almost a year of legal wrangling and public, at times ugly, exchanges with Matt and Reby Hardy, Anthem is opting to not contest Matt’s trademarking of the concept and characters.

On the latest edition of Raw, Hardy began rolling out the act again for his new bosses at WWE. Asked about that by Sports Illustrated, Anthem exec and Impact president Ed Nordholm offered a downright gracious statement:

“We have seen the character development and will be interested to see where they take the concept. Our new talent agreements all incorporate language that allow talent to continue to use their IMPACT persona after they leave the company. We are working with our legal team to amend our existing agreements to extend this to all of our current and former talent.”

SI says there have been no new negotiations between the parties, and Anthem/Impact will not receive a slice of any revenue Matt and WWE make off the gimmick.

Why drop it now? Maybe they decided to focus on their current product and not worry about something they couldn’t replicate without having the talent associated with it under contract? Perhaps after re-branding to a name they didn’t secure rights to (Global Force) before re-labeling themselves, they revisited their whole trademark strategy?

We’ll likely never know. But these stories hitting the web were enough to get Hardy to use the “B” word on Twitter…

WWE Raw drops back below 3 million viewers

Not surprisingly with no big event lead-in (or another pay-per-view (PPV) on the immediate horizon) and coming off a holiday weekend here in the United States, Raw’s viewership fell back below three million after a couple weeks above that mark. The Nov. 27 episode of WWE’s flagship show drew 2,759,000, down from last week’s 3.07 million.

The hourly breakdown for a show which started with Intercontinental champ Roman Reigns and ended with Kane:

Hour one: 2.96 million
Hour two: 2.72 million
Hour three: 2.6 million

Raw was fifth in audience size on the night among cable originals, behind a Monday Night Football game (also below its usual numbers at just over eight million viewers) and political talk shows on Fox News and MSNBC. WWE was third among 18 – 49 year olds in ratings share, behind the NFL and VH1’s Love and Hip-Hop.
